Logo on F1 Inter.
« on: September 30, 2017, 08:25:26 PM »
Can anyone identify the unit the logo belongs to?

The truck is likely either RAE or RAEME

I can't help you with the unit, but that looks like Bung, the alcoholic jester from the Wizard of Id comic strip.

Bung is a great thought.  Thanks.

The truck also has the letter "E" as the designator on the bridge weight sign.  Any ideas on that one?

From the "Vehicle Markings" thread:

One of the Unimogs in the Sydney auctions, 38-626 has the image of "Bung" from the Wizard of Id cartoon, on the sides of the doors. Now Bung is a bit of a lovable rogue, but he also happens to be the logo for the Finks Motorcycle Club, and having this on the side of your truck might draw some unwelcome attention from both sides of the law.

What Army Unit has adopted Bung?, and are they aware of the connection to the Finks!!

Still no ID yet on the unit.

Looking at your link on that truck it has the unit serial "21" from Stephen Taubert's book the only reference to "21" by itself (not over another number) is 13 FD Sqn (under HQ 5MD Perth) so I'm guessing it is probably 13 Field Squadron RAE?  Any agreement on that?

It has an unusual body reminiscent on a WWII 60cwt Blitz Engineers body.

I wonder if the E could be something like explosives?

If this is 13 FD SQN, which was a CMF/Reserve unit during the truck's service.  Which div sign would it have worn the swan of 5MD or the CMF/AR crossed swords and which one 2nd or 3rd?

BTW this is not my truck, just info for a friend.

Hi Diana,

13 Field Squadron  RAE is part of 13 Brigade.  I think back in the day of 3 Div it was under command the 3rd Div. to answer your question the formation sign would have been 3 Div in the days of the international truck.

Today it is part of the ARes 2nd Div.

Hope that helps.

Mick

Thanks Mick

This raises the question about which units actually wear their logo of the military district.  I remember as a kid I went to school just up the road from Randwick Barracks, frequently CL trucks and even buses would drive by with the waratah over the blue background but I don't remember many if any of the GS vehicles carrying the 2MD div sign.  I have however seen a Military District sign on an ex-CMF armoured vehicle.

So how does one truth the subject?

Diana

Hi Diana,

Heaps of units would have used the Military District  TAC plate , any unit that fell outside of a division ( 1,2,3 )or command ( Field Force, Training, and Logistic ).

So for example , Army Recruiting Sydney  its unit sign would have been the red Waratah on light blue back ( as you mentioned) and a black plate with white numerals 2 over 141.  DSU Watsonia would be  the 3MD plate , the blue shield with the Southern Cross ( Victoria) and a Black plate with white numerals and letters, WSA over 122.

Hope you can make some sense of that ?

Cheers,

Mick
