Treating new canvas?

Hi All,
I just purchased a new roof for the series 3 and was wondering if i just install it or if it would require any treatment or waterproofing before i install it.
I treated my old canvas just before winter with a product from BCF that was similar to PVA glue but dried clear. however it has darkened the whole thing a few shades.

I'm planning a trip next weekend and a long haul next month so would like to get it on and sorted asap.

Hi Nick,

it will depend on the origin of the canvas, if it's cheap indian or chinese canvas, the best advice is to take it off and replace with Quality Australian made canvas.

Assuming it is Australian made canvas they are all proofed, so you don't need to do anything from a proofing point of view, the best quality proofing is Dynaproof - a Wax Convertors technology.

But you should put the canopy on and secure tightly, then wet (and I mean really wet) the canvas and dry it 2 to 3 times to set the canvas properly - ie tighten up the weave and get the thread to fill up the stitching holes.

then you'll have a water proof canvas that fits correctly and is resistant to further shrinkage

The canvas is original surplus or a damn good copy. non cam.
Its been drizzling most of the arvo as we managed to fit it in a clear patch so has been getting wet and we've got a storm coming through as i type.

Based on my experiences with my 101 canvas I would be more worried about treating it for UV - I treated mine each year for waterproofing but it was UV that got it - was still waterproof even if rotting away from the UV.

So get a product that has a UV protection component - a good canvas will remain waterproof without additional treatment if looked after.

I'm not aware of a UV treatment for canvas. Do you have a brand name?

I have a camouflage cover that the green component has faded on three sides, I notice it sorta comes back to original colour when wet!
Is there a product that I can use to bring it back??

Simple answer is Nope.  It's actually the die pigment fading due to UV exposure, notice the black and tan ink doesn't fade. The waterproofness will still be good.
