Modded to tow truck
« on: September 03, 2017, 07:57:49 PM »
Picked this up a week ago, originally a light Ambo in Timor then underwent a total rebuild in 2010 and this is when the GM120 starts detailing the service records. When I purchased had under 13,000km on the clock.

Previous owner told me it was built by the Army utilising a Jib off a military Acco and looking at some of the features this is probably correct, otherwise it's a bit of an enigma.

I can tell you that the lifting gear design is not off the Holmes "Twin Boom" of an F5 International.

As suggested by the name, the Holmes gear has two separate booms which can each pivot and winch independently.  Looking at the lifting gear on the Perentie it is a single truss boom that does not pivot sideways like the either of the booms of the Holmes gear.

Looks very different, wonder where it came from? Only going off what the previous owner told me and it would be interesting to find out a bit more about the vehicle before I take it apart.

At first glance one could presume that the open truss of both sets of lifting gear appear similar but that's where it ends.

You have to remember that Holmes manufactured twin boom system from WWII and may still be building similar models.  The Twin Booms in Australia were fitted to Studebaker US6, International F5, Unimog and Mack NIL as well as for civilian operators.  In fact NSW Government Buses had a number of Leyland Mammoths with Holmes 600 twin boom gear.

Where ever it came from it's still a nice bit of kit you've got your hands on.

Had a search, but can't find the thread. Wasn't there a post regarding a converted 6x6 used as a 4wd recovery vehicle in the Vic High Country or Skifields? Or maybe it was AULRO? I recall that pics of that vehicle showed it to be an apparently well-built, but certainly non-military modification.

Vic High Country is where it came from, well built, damn right, everything is very solid, wiring was as good as you get certainly no expense spared on any of the workmanship. If anyone has use for the setup, please let me know, have it listed on Gumtree with the Warn M10000 24v winch.

I've read about that one before.

I think it was a civy build. Still looking for where it was mentioned.

Gumtree Ad: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/helensvale/truck-parts/jib-crane-from-military-tow-truck/1158147155

Price is highly negotiable as I need it gone ASAP, I have absolutely no idea what it's worth but I imagine the winch has to be somewhere around $700 but then again I may be way off the mark as the only ones I have found are in the US and about 3 yrs ago.

So if you can use the rig, please PM me.

Thanks Hugh
