9.00 tyres on a Series III FFR?
« on: August 23, 2017, 10:53:29 AM »
Has anyone successfully put 9.00 or the metric equivalent 255/100R16 tyres on a Series III with extended spring hangers?

I cannot answer your questions - but look at the Series 3 1 tonners and see what setup they had and copy that.

As far as tyres go you need to investigate that very thoroughly - 9.00x16 are basically not available in Aust but can be acquired in the UK.  About the only 255/100R16 tyres are Michelins and cost a fortune around $700-$800 new.  I am using BFG MTs 315/75R16 as an alternative - about the same diameter as the 9.00x16s but much much wider.  There are smaller diameter tyres available - say 285/75R16 but I guess you are looking for the larger diameters.

Getting tyres at a reasonable price is an issue.

Some of the companies that modify Iveco Daily 4x4 sometimes have new/take off 255/100-16 Michelin tyres listed for around the $300-$400 range.

Land Rover put 9.00 16 tyres on the SIII chassis with extended hangers.  The SIII Australian Army chassis IS a 1 Ton chassis.

The difference between a SIII Au Army and a 1 Ton is that the 1 Ton has a lower ratio steering box than standard Land Rovers and the 1 Ton also have an all helical gear low ratio transmission.  That said many 1 Ton owners have retrofitted the standard ratio boxes because it improves road speed but reduces off road performance.

While the original 1 Ton's had ENV 4.7:1 ratio diffs and the early SIII 1 Ton had Salisbury fronts they subsequently returned to standard Rover front diffs.

you will have to adjust your steering stops on your swivals, otherwise the tyres will hit the chassis.
this will give the land rover a larger turning circle.
