Has anyone ever gone a little extreme and fitted muddies before?
I know it's sacrelige to modify an ex-army land rover, for reasons of military preservation and pedigree,
but what about massive tyres, those front cut guards look like they could do with a big set of muddies
to fill them up, plus with the military lifted shackles, they would fit fine, with no damage to vehicle.

Tyres is hardly a modification  Taking an angle grinder to the body might be more considered so  Make any changes easily reversible if you are concerned about making changes

Great stuff looks like Noel is the tyre guy. Those Hi-milers are actually equally as appealing as the bar treads to me,
I remember them looking great on our old series 3 109. Chunky as. Though they are probably not correct military uniform.

Yep they where used in service so maybe that's your answer to Bar treads and chucky muddies all in one!

Yeah true, I don't think i've really ever used a power tool on any of my landies..
All i ever need is a socket set, screwdrivers, shifters, spanners, rubber mallet, wd40 and a rivet gun

Anywho, nice shorty!! i really like the canopy set up it looks like something out of Tomb Raider.

Stud pattern is the same but stud size is different between S2's and later S3 onwards (smaller on S2's). You can put later rims on earlier landies if you use the right nuts, but of course there is the possibility of damage running a rim with larger holes. I had my hubs changed to S3 hubs so I could run these rims. I am sure the rims are a larger size but not 100% sure....I'm sure someone else will be able to tell us 

Thanks for liking how it looks. Most of the time I run it without the soft top on, just have the tonneau on the rear. I still have all the hoops & canvas and original screen, so can change it back to a more "in service" look in a few hours if I want

Thinking (just outloud), would it be possible to fit ferret runflats to a 109 S2a? They are for a 6.50 rim so I take it they won't go on a landy rim, what military rim would fit?

I say old boy, you would probably need jolly split rims or split wheels to fit those ruddy run flats as they are likely a heavier ply rating. Ruddy road speed is quite abysmal with the 7.50 so would not recommend less for on road use. Smaller diameter tyres, can however be better geared for off road. Simex centipedes get us the furtherest off road old boy, especially when their pressure is lowered. Currently running these in the most modified example of the solihull machines that we have fitted with 253 V8 and a stronger tranny and tranny box and the extra power is useful with the 35 centipedes. Those tyres you refer to are not cheap I would expect. Good luck and have a nice day.

Yes but, as mentioned, gearing is an issue.
I suggest you either buy a ferret, buy a 101, sell them to me, or sell them to the booger.

That pic is of a 1 ton Landrover. Yep, I'd like one of them too. I seem to remember reading the Aus ex mil SIII chassis is very similar to a 1 ton chasis.
Maybe buy one of those and change the diffs.
There is a 1 ton Landrover website somewhere.

The SIII Oz military IS a 1 Ton chassis.  The early SIII 1 Ton had a Salisbury front axle but this was later reduced to a standard Rover diff.

The big differences between the Oz Mil and the 1 Ton is the low ratio/all helical (1:1.56 ratio) transfer box and the low ratio steering box. Max speed on a 1 Ton is about 80KPH with the engine revving its ring off.

35 centipedes ought to be similar to 9:00x16. Reluctant to post pictures on public forums. Cannot see a special Tsfr box is absolutely necessary, but the extra strength would be desirable. Can we fit 101 wheels to series land rovers? Certainly fitting the 20inch wheels and gm diesel to a Dodge Weapons carrier made for a nice vehicle for a well known military enthusiast. Some vehicles do benefit from modifications, other especially rare ones however ought to be preserved as time capsules with patina.

According Michelin 9.00 16 XZL are 36 inch.

No 101 rims are 6 stud.
 
Series forward controls have 6.5 inch 5 stud rims used with 9.00 16 and will fit on Series Landies, 90s and 110s (none of the standard series 6.5 rims have the bead retainer required for tubeless tyres). The early 130s had a negative offset 6.5" rim roughly equivalent of the SIIA F/C and SIIa/SIII 1 Ton rims (tubed rims). The later 130's had positive offset rims which may cause steering problems on series Landies with 9.00 16 tyres.

Unfortunately you will also find that most modern 35 and 36 inch tyres require rims with minimum width around 8 inch wide.

Reversed Disco 1 7" steel rims are the usual option for 35s or after market rims.

BTW: the all helical transfer has lower ratios, but marginal extra T/F strength and uses the same main gearbox all be it with a longer mainshaft.
