Bar Tread Tyres for Series 2a GS 109"
« on: May 24, 2012, 02:17:59 AM »
Hi all,

I have spotted some bar tread tyres online

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tractor-Tyre-6-00-16-NEW-suit-Front-Lug-Bar-Tread-/200549392655?pt=AU_Motorcycle_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb1ace10f

Apparently they are a Deestone BAR Tread D501 Lug 6 Ply Tyre and they 'suit early Land Rovers'.

Just wondering if they will fit my SIIA GS 109, (standard rim size) and if so, are they road legal?

600.16 tyres are ideal for Jeeps and Series one Land Rovers but the military Rovers in Australia were fitted with 7.50.16 tyres and these are getting a little more difficult to find.

They're 6.00x16. You'd best look for 7.50x16. (It's a width thing)
I've seen lots of vehicles with bar treads on the road so I can't see why they're not road legal.

Hi, I just bought some Olympic trojan bar treads 750 x 16 from a guy in sydney, they are original tyres and vary in wear and good condition. He is on ebay as noelsandy, but call Noel 0408 675 850. Tell him Scot from Ballarat put you onto him and he'll look after you. About $80 - $100 each

Cheers
Scott

Do you think I'd be lucky enough?
Do you think he'd have 9.00x16's?

Olympic Steel Treks 7.50 R16

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Olympic-Steel-Trek-7-50-R-16-LT-Tyre-landrover-tyres-4x4-off-road-mud-steeltrek-/350560135846?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item519f032aa6#ht_839wt_1180

I bought some Steel treks from Noel in Sydney as well as the bar treads they where $80, he also has NOS Hi Milers at $120 and 80 - 90% tread Hi Milers at $100, he seems very trust worthy and can drop at freight depots.

He still had Bar treads left as of yesterday....

Cheers

The Steel treks come up at the auctions regularly.......I bought a pallet load a while back.

Bar treads (Non-Directional Tyres 'Tires' ) can be bought new from Vintage tyres in Melbourne...but you going to pay for them or.....you can buy them from the States from a few places here is a link to STA

Great stuff looks like Noel is the tyre guy. Those Hi-milers are actually equally as appealing as the bar treads to me,
I remember them looking great on our old series 3 109. Chunky as. Though they are probably not correct military uniform.

Thanks for the treasure trove of info, its this kind of help that keeps our vehicles alive and healthy :)

Has anyone ever gone a little extreme and fitted muddies before?
I know it's sacrelige to modify an ex-army land rover, for reasons of military preservation and pedigree,
but what about massive tyres, those front cut guards look like they could do with a big set of muddies
to fill them up, plus with the military lifted shackles, they would fit fine, with no damage to vehicle.

Thinking of having a set of muddies/wheels rims for fun/spare
and primarily using bar tread/standard rim.

Any thoughts?

Master_Chief has or had a set fitted to one of his Workshop trucks and it did have a certain appeal to it.  8)
