Protec aerosol cans
« on: March 30, 2017, 10:01:44 AM »
I seem to have a continuing problem with the protec aerosol cans not spraying properly. The tip continues to block and i have to clean it with thinners.
I shake the can well before use but it still seems that the paint is too thick?
Does anyone else have this problem? Do I need to shake it for 15 minutes or have i got a faulty batch of paint?
Any clues?

G`day mate,

this is a reoccuring problem with the protec spray can.  If you return it the swap no problems at all.  On advice from FFRMAN and in my experience.  If you leave her in the sun to warm it up prior to use and as you have done  - Shake really well, it shouldn`t be a problem.

It can be a pain in the bum so good luck.

Cheers,

Mick

Very common problem, the flatteners in it are very heavy, I put the can in warm water for a while and quite often use a nozzle off a rust kill can, as it has a larger aperture

When I have this problem I soak the nozzle in a small cap of thinners and hold the can tip in thinners for a couple of minutes. I then press the tip with a cloth to make the paint spurt out, replace the nozzle and try it. It often takes a few attempts to get it right but always seems to work in the end. Of course a good vigorous shake beforehand is needed.

The above is bang on.

If you can also paint in the warmest part of the day and have the job surface warm as well helps a lot. Make's a big difference between painting in winter and summer.

The colours come out of the cans differently in their atomisation.

Look out for the Black it runs and splatters badly. Then the green has a tendency to run a bit and the brown is a pleasure to use.

My local has been only too happy to exchange dud cans weren't surprised.

I agree with all comments and add - shake the can twice as much as you need and when you get a good spraying nozzle, take it off the empty can and put it on the new can.  In this way you always have lots of spare nozzles.  I buy 4 litre cans of paint and take it into my local paint shop and they fill a number of spray cans that I want for touch ups for a very reasonable price.   ;)

I was speaking to a Protec retailer in Brendale where I purchased a couple of these cans and mentioned this issue. He said the problem is that when the cans aren't shaken correctly/enough the resins set in the pickup tube in the can which blocks them up or some such thing. He went on to say most people dont 'shake' rattle cans correctly ie they hold them vertically and shake them up and down. He reckons the correct way is to hold the can horizontally and rapidly shake the can doing a 'see-saw' kind of action. This makes the ball bearing in the can run up and down the length of the can while also bouncing around in the can which mixes everything better and more evenly than holding vertically and having the ball bearing only bouncing part way up inside the can. In his opinion the cans shouldn't cause trouble doing it that way. He did say they should be shaken twice as long as a normal rattle can though.
Kind of makes sense I guess...
