Olive paint for Series III
« on: April 13, 2017, 10:20:44 PM »
I am needing to paint a civilian truck cab in olive drab to match the Auscam scheme on my Series III FFR. According to the local Wattyl paint rep, the lustreless olive drab and the bases for it are unobtainable. Will the Protec paint match the older olive drab? I've noticed the green on the Perenties is a lot lighter than what is on my FFR.

As has been discussed at great length many times before, the Protec paint is the correct colour.
The reason why the green on the vehicle is much lighter is because it has been exposed to many years of weathering and has faded.
Generally, with paint, the base fades (or is changed by weathering and sunlight). (You can confirm with your Watyl expert.) What this generally means is if you get paint made up to match the lighter faded colour, the matched paint will fade even lighter again.
You now can chose what you want to do. What ever you do, you will get diferent colours. Either be happy with that or repaint all the olive drab bits in Protec.

Thanks Mick,

Is the Protec code I need still 342-1166?

Also, what colour undercoat is used? The back of the cab is still mustard yellow.

Do you know of any suppliers in SW Victoria I can order from?

There is a Protec shop in Ballarat.
That is the one I use.

Thanks, I may go down this week if I get the time. Do they sell over the counter or is it restricted due to anti I/R content?

Over the counter.
It's normal paint. Not anti I/R.

Ok thanks. Any idea how much area an aerosol can covers? Or should I buy it in a tin & invest in a spray gun?

You know how to spray paint!
Properly?

Buy it in a tin. I have a compressor and spray gun. I'll bring around my tandem and you can get your eye in spraying that.

Actually given the quality of the job the army did, a cheap airless spray gun would do the trick.  The Protec paint is pretty forgiving but as discussed when first painted it does has a bit of gloss and takes about 3 months to flatten down to the required lack of lustre - when i first painted my 101 I thought I put the wrong paint on because of its lustre but it soon settled down and now 7 years later has gone to the next stage of starting to peel just like the army paint jobs did  :o

They will sell it over the counter, but it might be wise to call them first to see if they have sufficient in stock: Protec Ballarat.

Better still, call the national customer service line on 1800 076 466. They can tell you what stock Ballarat has, but can also direct you to an agent that might be closer than a factory branch. If the agent doesn't stock the Cam Paint (as most automotive refinishers aren't likely to), they can have your required amount dispatched out to the agent to be collected by you.

Thanks Mick, at this stage I'm only looking at my options and I still have to repair the cab and strip the old paint first.
