Hi,
I am the proud owner of an ex-mil no.5 trailer I purchased for $10.00 in early 1991 at the Queensland Public Trust auctions in Townsville.
It appeared to be a wreck made up of what was left after they repaired a couple of other No. 5's. The Box had a big square cut out of the rear bulkhead and the tops of both front corners were badly bent, suggesting a roll over. The axle had a shattered cast iron hub one side, probably because the Landy wheel studs had voluntarily removed themselves while still moving. There was no hitch, but it appeared to have been fitted with a hitch other than a pintle ring, because a mounting plate was welded up front.
The chassis was perfect and came with softer springs and shock absorbers. At the time AND if you could get one, these trailers were retailing for over $2000, so $10 plus $150 freight home for a trailer I had to rebuild seemed like a good deal.
It's been a while since I rebuilt it, but I vaguely remember "1966" being stamped somewhere. It has rivets where two plates were attached left and right of the drawbar on the front cross member, but that’s about it.
I am wondering if any ARN's or other marks may be stamped on the chassis as any data that may have been on the original auction listing is long gone. Are there any other ID marks normally stamped into the chassis I can look for?
Thanks in advance
