S2 Command Reconnaissance (CR) in Vietnam
« on: September 06, 2012, 09:56:02 PM »
Hello all

Did any S2 CR Land Rovers go to Vietnam? REMLR ARN info on these vehicles do not indicate any Vietnam involvement.

Just not sure whether it's O/S, maybe ZD or Hodgo will know from the formation signs on the Inter, cheers Dennis

That shot was taken on an exercise in Australia. None of our tippers went to Vietnam in Bronze green.

I was told that when I purchased my CR that it had a one in three chance, since they only made three CR Light Machine Shop variants, that it was deployed to Vietnam. In the Mud and Dust book it states that there was one truck 1/4 ton Machine Shop Land Rover deployed.

Hope this helps.

I was of the impression that no S2 CR Land Rovers were sent to Vietnam.....until yesterday.

I was looking through some Vietnam War photos when I spotted this...

Two S2 CR Truck, Utility, 1/4 Ton, GS, With Stretcher Frame sitting alongside S2As.

This photo came from the Stan Middleton collection. It is just one of a number of images taken at a time when the Australian base was flooded. Here is another image from that series. You will note the two Vietnamese women thus confirming the location.

If these two Land Rovers can be confirmed as S2 CRs then Richard will need to update the CR history page :)

I am 90% sure that Mike Cecil found navy records showing which vehicles were sent to vietnam across the board, hence his precise numbers.  I must get around to asking him for a copy, or their location to obtain one.  That said, lack of time to actually put the information in vs the mound of ARN's I still have to put into the system as well as page updates has slowed me down from actually asking the question.

Might take you up on that.  Challenge is making sure that people aren't working against one another as something done by one can be over written by another.

Perhaps the census codes would be a good start, there are a lot to add to the list.  I'll PM you.

It is that too, but the Tac signs signify that the vehicle in question belongs to the Kiwi 161 artillery battery, hence the different colour. The bonnet is different as well.

Now this one is confusing.

The following photos show an 88 Series 2 Land Rover used by the Australian/New Zealand Red Cross. I think it is a civilian model but it does however have Australian ARN plates. 108-664. So what does this make the vehicle? An official Australian army Land Rover? There is no reference to 108-664 in REMLR ARN page.
