Perentie 4x4 6x6 Warning Light Array - 'Idiot Lights'
« on: October 21, 2016, 12:53:50 PM »
Yesterday whilst on the bitumen, something happened on the dash. I stopped and checked for oil or belt problems. Nothing obvious, so I drove home. Again this morning I checked the oil etc, no probs.

When it occurred, the Fuel, Temp and Volts clocks showed no readings (like they had no power) and an amber symbol was on on the righthand side of the array (mystery symbol looks like a carby butterfly) as well as the red oil light as well as a red ignition light (battery symbol).

Today I have consulted the Defender Owner Manual for 1984 (all I could find that was near what I wanted).

I may have a faulty oil sender switch or something.

Well, what an enigmatic ill-defined lucky dip is this little corner of the Perentie...

After some photoshop work I have started making a file for the 48 49 50 51 ARN series Perenties.

I would assume the Bushranger series would be different/more modern?

Maybe the 4 door wagons are also different too?

Can members please add to the info here and lets get the different arrays nailed down.

I'm going out for a test drive to see if the fault light Christmas tree returns..

Your number 17 is choke on the V8 civvy models (so yes, carb butterfly is accurate) and glow plugs on Isuzus (inc. Perentie).

Thx for that.
So 17 is for glow plugs and that was one that lit up yesterday. Today on a 50km drive - no gremlins at all.

Has anyone ever seen number 7, a low fuel idiot light, come on? Is it active/connected or not? I've not seen mine come on and I sometimes go low. So the question could be this -how low do you have to go for it to work?

Yep. Mine did. Last weekend coming back from Dookie.
It came on about 1/4 on the gauge. At about 1/8 it's bone dry.

Thx Mick, so its on the 6x6, gtk.

Some more info on the array, its NSN is 2540 66-128-5006 and the LR number is PRC6657.

There is currently a new PRC6657 priced at $250 on feebay.

...buts photos there show some minor differences - eg, no 24v on light 18.

+++ additional info: My mate Wayne has the GS 4x4 and his array is as per the unit picture from ebay. No "24v" and no "6x6". The GS and FFR part must be different.

It doesn't have the 6x6 lamp in the top LHS doesn't that make it one for a civilian Defender?

It came on, on both 49-852 and 50-422 but on 852 only after I replaced the tank unit (which wasn't originally working)

BTW: the choke warning lamp came on the other day when the EDIC motor wasn't  operating, but thats probably only because I kept cranking and I noticed it

Whilst pulled over checking oils etc, did you turn the motor off?

Perhaps your ignition switch is failing? I've been using the glow plugs for cold starts lately, and noticed while the key is in the glow plug position the other gauges you mentioned die back towards zero, but i dont leave it long enough to go the whole way. If the switch is failing internally and is in fact switching itself to the glow plug position i would expect the symptoms you've described

Thank you for that, that just may be the solution to this little mystery. I will have to find time to take off the trim and check it out.

Might need a RAEME Guru to confirm this but I would think the guages should drop off when using the glow plugs because
of the heavy amperage draw on the battery.  Works that way on mine.
