Twin Fuel Tank Command Recon
« on: May 23, 2012, 09:50:01 PM »

Hi all just in the process of dismantling a Census 6005 Command Recon for repairs and minor restoration.

It has twin fuel tanks, change over valve in the seat box and dash switch.

But only one fuel filler, the second tank is a underseat fill type, looks like a genuine series one fuel tank with a massive cap amd pull out extender neck.

Given that the REMLR archives state that the C/R was genereally civilian in layout, do you think this extra tank could be an inservice modification?

It just looks too well done to be a backyard job, unless Landrover offered a second tank aftermarket option.

cheers,

Jamie

Hi, my CR definately has only one tank, it went into service in 58 and came out in 68, nearly all CR's had a short service life as they where replaced by 2a's. I would assume it was an after service fit otherwise they would most likely done them all as a mod. But with 2a's ordered to replace them I dont think it would have happened in service - but I could be corrected.
I keep it in though as the one small talk drives me crazy filling it up al the time!

Cheers
Scott

It could be a unit modification.  I know that unit mods were more common when the command recon was in service.  Perhaps the MP's wanted more fule range for convoy escort or some such?

Could well be an in service mod and could be a gunbuggy tank as they were underseat fill as per series 1's. pics would be nice.

G'day Ed Straker  :)

there is a good possibility that the second under seat tank was a unit mod,to give extended fuel range, seeing that both you and the vehicle are in WA there could be a connection with SASR,as their vehicles had extended range, and seeing that the vehicle was in service for 10 years it would have been brought up to 2a fuel capacity standard at least. maybe as the unit hack.

cheers
