Need help finding an ARN.
« on: August 20, 2016, 07:19:16 PM »
At this stage all I have to go on is an engine number which is 25250137k. And a possible year, 1970.
It's a 109 gs.

2short,

That Engine number does not make sense. Except for some early ones (as far back as the 116 series), all of the 2A engine numbers start with 253.
If the person who gave you the number got it wrong, could it be 25350137K?

If so, that would make it 178 325, a 1971 GS sold off in 1979.
The photo certainly looks like a late 2A, what do you think?

No I don't have a chassis no I'm afraid. The photos were sent to me. I haven't seen it in the flesh.

Yes I thought the engine no. looked wrong too. And going by the dash I thought it may have looked like a later one.
Does it look like the guards had no tool holders or have they been removed?

The guards and radiator support panel are replacements aren't they ?

A '71 S2A should have head lights in the guards ?

Might explain the lack of tool holders...

That would mean the bullbar has been changed too.
Maybe it was a half step before production switched over fully to building late 2a units.

Yes and I checked for the chassis number through vicroads. Would you believe it's listed as unknown! It only had the engine number which Mike k correctly pointed out must be wrong too.

Hi Mike

I agree with you about the engine number, but not for the reasons you give. The engine sequence 252501xx? were fitted to civilian vehicles in October and November 1966 however the suffix letter was "H".  (BTW: Take a look at the 114 ARN prefix and you'll find heaps of 2525xxxxH sequence engines, but no #137H)

If the engine is original to the vehicle, the vehicle prefix will be in the region of 25316XXXC

The lack of gardening tool brackets may indicate an FFT/FFR, which had the tool holders behind the seats, although you'd expect  the RF cable outlet and post with the reinforced hole for the ATU on both front mudguard tops.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Got the chassis no today. Confirmed as 178-325.
Engine no was incorrectly recorded.

It usually is something simple like a wrong number somewhere.

Although this is a late 2A, it is interesting that it has the earlier type brush bar and radiator panel with the headlights fitted.

I know that 178 193 was the same as this when I bought it at auction in 1990, I wonder how many of the headlights in wings 2As there actually were?

G suffix chassis it is.

This written by uncle ho back in 2012 in another thread:

You vehicle is a late 2a "G" suffix chassis, which would have normally been a headlights in the guard unit, BUT, there were a few which were destined for SVN which were fitted with the earlier style front panels (to make parts stores efficient/compatable) your vehicle looks like one of those, there weren't a lot maybe 50 tops, then the decision was made to withdraw from SVN and any further vehicles supplied were the then current lights in guard 2As suffix "G"s

So I wonder if 178-325 ever made it to svn?
