4BD1-T
« on: August 12, 2016, 10:23:13 PM »
Hi fellow enthusiasts
I am interested in bidding on a Turbocharged 4BD1 engine at Grays auction.
I have a Normally aspirated GS and would love the extra power when towing the No5 fully loaded.
Do they just drop straight in?
What modifications need to be done to achieve this?
Thanks in advance!

I don't believe that it is quite as simple as a drop-in task . I undertand that there may be issues with mounts and the air duct  clearance. Nothing insurmountable and I look forward to reading others views.

Of more concern would be the condition of the engine you buy. Remember, these engines have been pulled out for a reason - sometimes simple , somtimes catastrophic. Caveat Emptor (buyer beware 😊).

A simpler and potentially cheaper alternative is one of KLR's turbo kits.

Good advice Dugite
Can the standard 4BD1 engine cope with the aftermarket Turbo?
Anyone who has fitted one would love their feedback!

The short answer us yes - there's one here😊.

I'd suggest ringing Brad at KLR in busuness hrs and discussing it with him.

Banjo, it will drop straight in and bolt up but the exhaust pipe and the aircleaner will need to be modded, that's about it. Same fuel and electrical connections. As Dugite says factor a possible engine rebuild into the buying price, that way you wont be disappointed.

Hi Guys, am doing the same upgrade at the mo to 2 110's.   Exhaust is definitely a thing to conquer.  No big deal.   Be advised that the the standard 4BD1T has piston squirters and a Nitrided Surface hardened crank, where as the 4BD1 NA does not.  The T engine might be good for 15 to 20 PSI boost while the NA version might be good for 8 to 12 psi boost.   Big difference.  I talked to KLR about 3 years ago, and the operator replied to my question about piston squirters with.....all diesels have em.  Not so.  The T is the way to go.

Also the driveline aspects or the increased power.

A quick survey to back up heresay...
1. hands up if you had to install a fresh clutchplate (usually an upgrade to HD clutch) after installing the turbo?
2. at what time or km after the install?

Plenty of NA's running 20-30 psi. The headgasket is good for 50 psi or so haha
