A pressure plate ploblem

Today was supposed to be 'Engine In' day but after buttoning up the flywheel housing and then the flywheel, I went to test fit the pressure plate and couldn't get it to locate!. I tried to set it on the locating pins a couple of times with no success. Only then did I have a count of the locating pins on the flywheel and then counted the locating holes on the pressure plate and came up short.
Flywheel has 3(at 12, 4 and 8) and Pressure plate has only two(at 12 and 6) . So what to do? should I grind off two lugs from the flywheel or drill two holes in the pressure plate? Everything else seems to be fine.

I am no expert in this field, but a friend who reads, but doesn't post on the forum told me the following.

Clutch have 3 Dowels.

His flywheel is configured for 9 1/2" whereas his pressure plate is for 9".

He should check to ensure his clutch plate is 9" then remove the offending
dowel.

It was either remove the dowels or drill holes in the pressure plate. Apart from those small problems everything else appears to bolt together. Fingers crossed..

The Motor is a civvy 2.25 litre 4 cylinder from a series 3. The actual series 2 and 3 pressure plates are the same diameter but completely different in height (thickness) but that is compensated by the difference in gearbox bellhousing depth. The friction surface of each pressure plate matches the respective clutch plate surface. Really the only thing stopping pressure plate seating is the location of the locating dowels. What I intend doing is bolting a series 3 and the series 2 pressure plates together face to face and using the hole location in the series 3 pressure plate as a guide to drilling matching holes in the series 2 plate. Problem solved.

Good move Adam! Removing the dowels would be a bad thing, because they do the accurate locating of the plate in the centre of the flywheel, whilst the bolts serve only to hold it against the flywheel,
