When a road vehicle is first used on Australian roads the relevant state or territory government's legislation generally requires that it continue to comply with the relevant ADRs as at the time of manufacture.
I have yet to find any documentation on side seats in soft skin vehicles not allowed, but the section of roll over protection for rear seats is a good read, and I don't think the perentie would pass without further work.
