Rear selt belts in 110 utility with side way seats in Qld.
« on: July 26, 2016, 04:51:27 PM »
I have inquired regarding adding seat belts to a 110 cargo with rear benches and having a modified compliance plate in Qld. I have not received the same answer from any two people I have asked. Can anyone tell me if you can install seat belts to a soft top 110 cargo model and register the vehicle in Qld. with a modified compliance plate that states it can carry more than 2 people. That is if 4 lap belts are installed then it can carry 6 people legally. I know it can be done in NSW but I don't know if the same vehicle can be registered in Qld. I am only interested in this from a legal point of view not a safety one.
Thanks

Yes, it can be done - I've seen a two registered as six seaters with mod plates to match (in QLD).

Thanks Dervish. Can you tell me if that is within the last year or so. One story I was told is that in the last 18 months or so regulation have changed and seat belts can no longer be fitted to side way facing seats in Qld. with a soft canopy.

I have had this done to mine, it is compliance and registered as an 8 seater. Quite an easy task, I took it to a mechanic who was licenced to carry out and comply vehicle modifications, just Google your local area.

The transport dept. just checked the numbers on the mod plate matched the vehicle VIN numbers and registered it. This was done 6 months ago.

Thanks Marlin. Did you have the belts and compliance done in Qld? I have had trouble finding someone to do it. That is install belts and compliance. I have found a company in Sydney that will do it. They want $330 per belt $400 for Qld. compliance plate and certification and $300 for rubber mounts around bars in back The vehicle is still down there getting power steering fitted so it is not a huge issue but would prefer to have it done up here.

Yes Qld. Either way it's not a cheap procedure, I believe the belts were about $150 each plus labour to do the job and the compliance plate around $200.

I would suggest you speak to QLD transport on this matter as far as I am aware ( and told so by a certified engineer side facing seats are no longer allowed in QLD.  ( In soft skin vehicles ).

Just because someone managed to get one done, and this may have been before the changes does not make it legal.  Best to check and double check, also check with your insurance company.

Do you have the appropriate legislation for that?
My understanding is that these rules cannot be applied retrospectively and are also applied by manufacture date.
If what you say is correct, there are an awful lot of civilian Landrovers and Landcruisers out there that are now "illegal".

Was not aware they made a soft skinned Troopy. Unless someone is doing conversions.

If what you say is correct, there are an awful lot of civilian Landrovers and Landcruisers out there that are now "illegal".

The retrospectivity only applies to options and equipment originally fitted to the vehicle when originially built.  If "new" equipment is fitted to an older vehicle then "modern" rules apply.

So if the vehicle has not had sideways seats and belts fitted previously, then to fit them now the modern rules apply.

Yep. You unbolt the roof. Just like Landrovers.

Oh, I still want to review the appropriate government document supporting your earlier claim. If it is indeed an enforcable rule, it must be documented somewhere.

What? Are you telling me Perenties are new?
Mine is a 1990. Older than those troopies shown.

I still want to review the appropriate government document supporting the claim side facing seats are no longer allowed in QLD.
