Split rims without tubes?
« on: June 05, 2016, 11:23:58 AM »
Hi Guys

This may be a dumb question, but I am confused:

Is it possible to run TUBELESS tires on split rims WITHOUT tubes, e.g. like the AYG8108 on a Perentie?

If yes, would this also work at lower tire pressures for sand, e.g. 12 psi?

Cheers,
Pete

Complex question.
Tubeless split rims, I understand, are in use in the trucking industry.
I doubt they are, or ever will be, available in sizes small enough for our applications.

No, for two reasons. The design of the the split rim used on smaller rims sizes are not airtight and will not hold any air pressure. The "Flap" that is aslo fitted on split rims is to prevent the tube getting pinched rather than providing an air seal.

And secondly, the shape of the bead seat is flat (or very slightly tapered) and will not hold the bead of the tyre in place. The rim needs the air pressure in the tube to hold the bead of the tyre against the rim. Tubeless rims have a safety bead design (noted as a J or JJ designation in the rim's size), and once seated the tyre will remain located against the bead even with 0psi.
