Perentie gearbox query
« on: June 02, 2016, 01:09:43 PM »
Hi, just wondering if there is someone out there who is not only a mechanic, but really knows their stuff regarding the Perentie 4 speed box.

It's not a big question, but I need to get a professional's opinion.

If you are that person, would you please PM me so I could run the question past you?

Many thanks, Alvin

Not at all P6X6.
It was just that after reading reams of information from many people on forums, I didn't want to start another round of endless advice and discussion, when a knowledgeable mechanic who knew exactly the problem, would be able to answer it straight up.

I've just had my fairly new Perentie go for it's first BIG service and although I'm more than happy to do ongoing things like oil changes and minor mechanicals, I needed someone to put it on the hoist, change all the oils and look it over with a trained eye.

I had read all the info regarding right and wrong oils in gearboxes and the potential disaster if using the wrong oils and after my service found the oil change in the box and transfer case to be Castrol Syntrans 75w90.

As I had hoped, with some excellent advice from Bearman, he took the weight of concern of my shoulders, as this particular oil is fine to use as it's in fact a very thin oil and not like a standard heavy 80/90 gear oil, and my mechanic advised that this had an excellent shear strength for this application.

No problem to use the 15w40 right through as it makes oil changing a no-brainer and the Syntrans is more expensive of course.

So with minus degrees here in Tas at the moment where I live, I can now rest a bit easier thanks to Bearman, as this car is a long term investment.

Hope that answers you question.
