I put this job off for ages, but today I decided to get it sorted. I have a day with the Army Reserve tomorrow, so I figured if it all went pear shaped, I'd have someone to ask!
The first issue with getting the filter out is space - a total lack of it!
I sprayed it all with degreaser, and wiped it all clean before I started, and then it was in with a stubby 17mm spanner which I got on Fleabay a few weeks, er months, ago!
If you have small hands, it will help. If you don't, then tough, get on with it.
I eventually got it loose enough to get 2 fingers in on each side of it and unscrewed it. Seemed to take hours, but it didn't really.
Eventually it dropped down enough to be able to carefully lift it out.
NOTE THAT AT THIS POINT FUEL DOES NOT POUR OUT, OR EVEN DRIBBLE OUT!
As you can see, the little plastic filter is screwed up inside the bolt - to remove it, you need to use something thin, like the back of a hacksaw blade and unscrew it out of the bolt. There are 2 slots in the end of the filter to make this easier.
After unscrewing it out, plus a little bit of jiggling around, you get the filter out, and presto, you find all the crud under the sun comes out with it. I can't believe mine was running as well as it was with all this crap inside the filter!
Lots more degreasing spray cleaned the bolt, inside and out, plus the filter, which is then screwed back into the bolt.
A new gasket on the bolt (I didn't replace the one on the other side of the banjo) and then it is the easy bit (not) to get it back in.
After much swearing and 2 more beers, it finally located under the pump and up it went.
Screwed up finger tight, then done up with spanner to a reasonable tightness.
Turned the key, and off it went - no priming, no pumping, no nothing.
The whole job took about an hour by the time I kept stopping to take pics, and drink beer.
Will see how it runs to Hampstead Barracks tomorrow, but I'm thinking it might run just a little better, but at least I now know it's clean, and I don't have a fear of doing it every 10,000 km's

And some more pics of the cleaned filter, plus the crud that came out of it.
Considering the size of the filter, I can't believe the quantity of rubbish it had stopped.

The part number for the small gasket/washer is 1157590010 and costs less than $2 each from your Isuzu dealer. If you loose the filter, you need to buy a new bolt, which comes with it - no idea on price of this part - 5157590270.
I can't see the filter ever wearing out, it just needs to be kept clean.

It is a little awkward but by the looks of things it was really worthwhile doing.

I find it helps to stuff some rag in the engine mount to avoid dropping components through it when they slip out of my fingers  :) .

I tried the rag, but it didn't give me enough room to drop it down to get out. I jut promised myself not to drop it! ::)

I've only seen diesel bug look smooth and slimy, that looks like rust flakes out of old jerrys to me. I could be wrong though.

Thanks TONA. Now that its clean (the filter that is), I'll see how it looks in another 1000km. I'm still going to pull the tank and flush it out, and while I'm doing it, I might hit it with some Fuel Doctor. I'm looking forward to seeing how it drives tomorrow.

;)      AUSSIE JEEPSTER, G/AY again , you will know if you have the bug, you will start to lose power, if this happens pull the filtor out cut it with a hacksaw or something open it up and if you see any of that black stuff in it if there is you have the bug, there are plenty of treatments on the market, pick a good brand and you will have to clean the complete system out and start again , you may have picked it up from your supplier, I try to get my fuel from a place that turns a lot of fuel overP.S, dont forget to clean your sedimentors as well good luck, .TONA.

Can someone comment on if it is practical to avoid (for a long period) the 17mm-drama-down-at-the bottom-of-the-chassis-banjo-bolt-filter by installing a easy access and easy clean extra primary filter somewhere in the line after the sedimeter and before the fuel pump banjo "hassle" filter?
