My MUTT

As I posted elsewhere, I bought a MUTT last November and it arrived up here in December. It needed more work (and money) than I was led to believe. My plan to have it on the road end of January turned out to be a pipe dream and I am now targetting mid-June.

I have done some mechanical work, painted it, fitted some electrics and comms gear. It still does not run so much more to be done. But I thought it mght be of interest so include  few photos I took today.

What is the history of this one?
Was it one of the ones that were cut in half and then welded back together?

It came from Pakistan Mike. Has had some odd repairs: the latest I discovered is that the windscreen is plain glass! New one being fitted Friday. I'm hoping I have run out of costly surprises...

Was this down in Canberra a couple of months back?

The reason I ask is there was a MUTT on a car trailer parked on the front lawn of a neighbours house for a couple of days and before I could ask about it, it was gone.

Yeah, it is a deep fording kit. It can be driven in five feet of water - but you won't catch me doing that! You can see some nutters on Youtube though.

Interesting, but no, been here since December. In fact when it arrived it was immobile and still not able to move under its own steam. I don't think there are too many around.

No, I can't gind any evidence it was cut. Guess the Pakis weren't too worried about US rules :)

Looking forward to seeing some more of this one, a bit of a rarity here in Oz.

As far as I know, most of the US ones were cut in half on disposal, apparently due to  concerns about safety.

Some of the American collectors managed to get the 2 matching halves of the same vehicle and welded them back together!

At least we don't have that issue with the Land Rovers. :D

Hopefully not.

When the MUTT arrived it was immobile as the brakes were seized. We got the engine running so that is promising.

Since then I have replaced the water pump, electronic ignition, spark plugs (with the correct type) and leads, distributor cap, engine mounts, temp and oil senders, fuel and oil gauges plus other little odds and ends. Have yet to replace the ball joints, do a carbie rebuild, finish repairing the fuel tank (was like a sieve after sand blasting), make new fuel leads, fit new brake master and slave cylinders, rewire the horn...

After that get it running and find out if there is any bad news in the transmission, etc. Hopefully not...

So, barring issues, I hope to have it mobile about mid-June. Must say I am looking forward to driving it. Had a couple of drives of one last year and that sold me!

I know very little about these vehicles and would enjoy learning the history of the MUTT.

When they served, what the safety issues were, spec's etc. . . . . .

Mine is an M151A2 made in 1976 by AM General and supplied to the Pakistan Army. Brought to Australia by Warwick's who have MUTT info at http://www.warwicks.com.au/sales/mutt_data.html and sold to a guy in Vic who sold it to me.

Parts are plentiful, as is info and help, but not in Australia so this pushes up the cost of a resto.
