Do you mean the little plastic lint filter under the banjo bolt. No need to take the lift pump off, just undo the banjo bolt and pull it out. the filter is screwed inside it.

Hi Tona, don't take the pump off.

The filter screws inside the banjo bolt holding the fuel line onto the bottom of the transfer (lift) pump. The banjo bolt is on the underside almost directly under the hand pump.

A few hints about getting the banjo bolt in and out if you haven't done it; 17mm ring spanner, stuff rag in the engine mount or the filter will fall through the mount onto the ground, firstly when you are getting it out and secondly after you have cleaned it when you are manoevering it in and it slips out of your fingers.

Probably a good idea to fit a new rubber coated washer (14/23mm) if you can get one.

Thanks Laurie.

So the filter itself screws out?  No need to prime afterwards?

As I recall the filter screws into the banjo bolt, you can see the threads on the filter. As ever, you'll need to bleed the air from the system using the hand pump and the adjacent bleed screw - I have found it also helps to crack the union on each injector once it is idling (but I haven't seen that recommended anywhere).

I have never had to 'crack' the injector lines whilst doing anything on the Isuzu engine, just bleed it at the pump, cheers Dennis

I told you no one else recommends it - must be my old tractor background I suppose - but IMHE they always seem to run a bit smoother sooner if this is done  :)

One additional tip...

Per the EMEI, there is an arrow on the bolt head for the bolt with the screw-in filter at the banjo fitting on the supply side of the transfer pump. It's on one of the faces of the hex head. This arrow lines up with the supply hole through the bolt and is supposed to align with the fuel supply line to the transfer pump. In practice, it can also be 180 degrees from the supply line. I painted that face of the bolt to make it easier to see with a mirror when messing around with that awkward banjo fitting.

It may be a coincidence, but after the first unsuccessful attempt at cleaning the low pressure side to remove disturbed sediment that was starving the engine... I then re-cleaned the filter and reassembled taking care to align the arrow... Bleeding was a cinch and the engine has never run better.

To be fair, I had also added algae killer to the diesel and changed the main fuel filter... Patently the banjo fitting should permit flow no matter what angle the bolt head is at, but it's is designed to be aligned.

Just for the record, here is the Army "pam" bullet points on"Bleeding the Fuel System" of the 4BD1.

quote

To bleed the fuel system, proceed as follows:

a. Loosen the screw cap on the transfer pump and operate the primer.

b. Loosen the overflow valve on the fuel filter adapter and continue operating the primer until a solid stream of fuel flows from the valve.

c. Tighten the overflow valve and continue operating the primer. Loosen the air bleed screw on the fuel injection pump and continue operating the primer until a solid stream of fuel flows from the air bleed screw. Tighten the air bleed screw.

d. Secure the primer screw cap and start the engine. Ensure that the engine runs smoothly.
