1968 Series 2A GS

G'day
        Picked up a 2A today as a donor vehicle for my 2A FFT. It has a bit of a mixture with civilian front guards and seat box. The engine has a eight bladed fan and associated pulleys.

Hi Hugh, welcome and thanks for the pics.

The ARN according to the chassis number on that ID plate would be 172-083. Nothing here in the AWM docs for that one as yet. Still it must have some stories after 48 years of travel...

btw, good to see the donk isn't a GMH substitute.

Hello Hugh,

Good to see a Series vehicle being towed by a slightly newer sibling!

Quite often the older vehicle is being towed by a much later built and more refined relative - like ones with coil springs.

What engine do you have in the Series III tow vehicle and how did it handle the task? 

I have the a Series III with the exactly the same aluminium tray and it has  the same truck cab colour as your tow vehicle. Although my Camino Gold paint has faded a fair bit more than your vehicle!. My vehicle has a 2.25 diesel that needs either an overhaul or replacement.

Good fortunes with your restoration project :)

                   The series three has a 2.25 in it. It is at the 80,000 K mark and it also needs a rebuild. Fortunately I did not have to tow the 2A too far; it was up to the job on the flats but had a good line up of traffic behind me when I pointed it at any sort of hill.  But with an all up weight of 2000 kg's (trailer 800kg’s) behind I could not fault it. It did protest though with the brake switch deciding to fail, but that’s Lucas electrics for you.

Does your tow vehicle - Series III have a  2.25 litre petrol or diesel?

My  2.25 Litre diesel Series III with the same tray as yours was made in May 1976. It was upgraded by a previous owner to the six cylinder brakes. The brakes were without a boost though and had a single circuit system. I was in the process of upgrading it to a dual system with a booster when the engine decided to play up and the clutch died  - bugger!

Apart from my ex-military Series III vehicles I also have another civilian Series III that originally had the six cylinder 2.6 litre petrol engine. The previous owner fitted a Holden 202 to it. It is a month younger being made in June 1976.  I have a slight Series III addiction ;)

Have you posted a thread about the vehicle that the one on the trailer is a donor for? If so which one is it? I look forward to keeping up with the progress on your restoration. Mine has been delayed for a while.

                   It is a petrol engine. The vehicle is a 1981 model. It has duel circuit brakes from new and the larger brakes. There is a thread in the radio vehicles section which has some details of the 2A FFT ARN 114-051 the donor vehicle is for. You will see by the attached pictures why I need the donor vehicle.

Hi Hugh

We are almost neighbours, I live across Cooks River in Arncliffe.

There are a number of components that won't be easily interchangeable between your SIIA and the SIII the firewall in particular, but the engine will be fine.  A few of us around Sydney may be able to assist with missing bits, just ask.

Is the SIII tabletop your regular driver?  If it is the LROC Sydney Branch is having its annual Series weekend up on the Glen Davis Road near Capertee, you would be welcome to come up as a guest.

                   I drive the S3 to work at Garden Island a couple of times a week. I also use it it on the weekends. I am a member of the LROC but have been fairly busy for the last couple of years spending a fair bit of time at sea. I have recently taken up a new posting so I am looking at completing a few of the outstanding projects I have.
