Pretty much always been 80 km convoy speed and 90km catch up speed.

Series 3's really struggle past 90km/hr and you run the risk of burning out exhaust valves pushing them too hard.

Hope that helps.

Hi Daryl,

FFR MAN is spot on and I think it was a dymo label on the dash not the painted on markings like you find in a Series 2A or F1 , Mk3 , etc.

Cheers,

Mick

Thanks men, bugger, I had planned to stencil on the gearbox cover in front of the gear stick. A dymo label ain't quite the same  :(

Maybe the Army should have bought the 4 cylinder version rather than the 6 as my civvy 4 cylinder had a top speed of 110kph on a long long long flat road.

For those with S3s, one method I used to help preserve the exhaust valves was to always make sure I allowed a generous tappet clearance on them when adjusting  :)

I don't know what the 1979 S3 that we had would really do flat out, as I didn't have a GPS then, but I certainly had it travelling at 100kph on the speedo.
