S2a in camo 174-879
« on: December 09, 2015, 08:41:22 PM »
The S2a in ODF cam with matching trailer from toolern vale now resides with me.
It's rough but pretty unique.
Will want to dig up its history as it should have a good story to tell.
06 on one of the tac plates, I wonder what unit?
Here's some pics.

Has the usual lichen everyone else has got.
Rear tray scrubbed up ok with a general sweep.
Data plate lists build date of 10/1968. Remlr arn lists have it as a 1969.
The trailer is a 1966 and is 173-798

Hi,

The markings on the door would suggest it belonged to 9 Transport Squadron ( 9 Trucks) .  3 Brigade Townsville.
The vehicles were painted just prior to Kangaroo 81 .

Cheers,

Hey shorty

One of the best camo schemes used by the ADF. And you have the trailer as well. Bloody good job 8)

A bit of cut and polish and the true camo colours should spring to life :). It would be interesting to find out the exact colours and codes.

I'm sure you are aware of these Land Rovers with same scheme.

Mick I've messaged a guy from 9 trucks on facebook to confirm some details. Hoping he'll respond soon.

Hi tommy, yes I've seen those pics and have always wanted to see more, now I have one.

Now I along with everyone else who has recently bought rovers from toolern vale are in need of a new canopy.  :)

Hello Mr 2Short!

Don't the Toolern Vale vehicles look so much better when you get them home rather than in a paddock with grass growing through them, can't wait to see it cleaned up.

attached are a couple of photos I took in 2012 of your vehicle

cheers
Scott

Good job 2short, another one saved.

It will be interesting to see if you can dig up any history on these. The training aid stencil is interesting, I wonder what its last job was before it was sold off?

Scott, you don't happen to have any 2012 photos of any other vehicles by any chance, possibly some FFT ones? ;)

Doesn't look like it got any worse since your pics scott.
Definately want to dig up its history Mike.

Have been told 9 transport sqn has 74 on unit plate. And its unit serial code is 7108.
My unit serial code of 7634 is still unknown.

During the ODF period of that paintwork (early/mid 80's) the 9th Transport Regiment was a unit within the Logistic Support Force (LSF). It would have worn the formation tac sign of the LSF.

Like this one (but no text): http://174.142.39.178/detail.asp?id=7111&n=Aust-Army-Vehicle-TAC-Sign-sticker---Logistic-Support-Force

It's a very nice and unique landy you picked up - well done  :)

Cheers Pete.
The trailer is definitely ex 9 trucks as it has 74 painted on the rear.
Also features the code 9W8.

Been told the land Rover may have been one of the postal trucks.

Hey Pete,

Don't get 9 transport Squadron mixed up with 9 Transport Regiment. 9 Tpt Sqn was part of the 1st Division ( Divisional Transport made up of 1 Tpt Squadron Sydney, 5, Tpt Sqn  Brisbane, 9 Transport Squadron Townsville)

9 Regiment Transport consisted of 16 Tpt Sqn ( Ares) , 18 Tpt Sqn, and 26 Tpt Sqn ( 3rd line Transport )

Cheers,

Mick

Thats fair enough. I've only ever heard of '9 trucks' being a nickname for 9 Tpt Regt.... Hence my post.

If its the squadron, then obviously the 1 Div formation tac sign would be used.

Cheers & thanks.
