Hi Andrew,

Are you talking about the spot where the Land Rover badge would be ?

Could be wrong but I would say that's an after service addition

Cheers

It seems more like it had a taller grill - due to the lines left on the UN white after the final coat of ODrab.
Looking at pix of other series IIs - mine seems shorter.
And yes I can see the oval 'shadow' from the badge - Thanks Stoker.

Onto the brakes now ...
So after I replace the leaking master cylinder - anyone prepared to walk me through best procedure of removing drums, cleaning/freeing workings, replacing cylinders, what 'special' tools I need, any other items while am in the area?
ANY tips/tricks most welcome.

Brakes.

They are pretty straightforward really, have you got the Workshop manual Andrew?

The drums should come off hopefully once you slacken the adjusters off, there should be a threaded hole towards the middle somewhere that you can fit a bolt into if they need some help. If you can, try to keep the original drums, some of the aftermarket ones can be a bit dodgy.

Wheel cylinders can probably be resleeved, or just buy a complete new set, avoid Britpart here, safety critical parts!

Probably a good idea to replace the 3 flexible hoses, the military ones need to be longer than the standard ones due to the military suspension height.

I have used a vacuum bleeder for the last few, it gives really good results with a firm pedal. ( A bit of grease on the bleed nipple threads helps stop air entering the thread here which can look like air coming out of the system).

Once the system is bled, it’s all about adjustment, the workshop manual has the correct procedure for this.

There are a lot of war stories about Series brakes, but I have found that the vacuum bleed method works really well.

Good luck Andrew, let us know how you go!

Cheers,

Mike.

Great stuff again thanks Mike!
Just what am after - can get into em with confidence.
Did have the hoses in mind - didn't occur to me they'd be longer.
I've been using All 4x4 in Newcastle and British Auto (that you told me about) Vic, for my parts so far.
Will hunt down one of those bleeder kits and no, I don't have a manual ...

Your radiator grille is off a series one. The correct one for your 2A is taller and the grille bars are round steel stock as opposed to the earlier woven pattern grille  bars

Thanks Tankradio - another mystery (to me) solved.
My mate who rescued my S2A also retrieved a Series I at same time.
Maybe that proud new owner is wondering why his grille aint quite right ...

No worries Andrew,

The vacuum bleeders are available on eBay or from a lot of good car parts places.

Well spotted Phill, the Series1 grille should be worth more than a 2/2A one, so that’s a win I reckon!

Righto - thanks Phil and Mike for your input.
So ... who can supply me the correct grille?
And who needs one for a S1?
Will post in Sale/Wanted as well.
