Close Scott,

It does fit in the tub, and is listed in the RPS.

Keep trying......

I have had one of those on loan to me from Scott C and I'm damned if I could work out how/what it was attached too, we sorta knew it secured a fuel can, but if some-one knows how please share it lol cheers Dennis

Correct Ross, well done.

Dennis, I have never seen one of these before, but I realised that the UK MoD also used them to secure a jerry can between the seats of their Radio vehicles.

I checked the part number, and it was the same as the one in our RPS.

You need a T bolt and a special wing nut, that mount to the bracket in the centre of the tub.

Assembled, it looks like this,

The T bolt and Wing nut stow here when not in use,

It fits in fairly well, and is retained by the angle bracket mounted to the floor. The clamp neatly holds the jerry can, as well as locking the lid closed.

I know that pretty much all of these were removed in service, but even my late 1970 GS had one, it still has the chain for the bracket. The 88s and 109s all had the bracket that fits in the middle of the tub, for the 109, this was not fitted to the civilian vehicles as far as I know. They were fitted in the CRs in 1959, and lasted up to the end of the 2As.

Mystery solved, I have always wondered how this worked myself.

I have been waiting on the solution to this mystery for 20 years. Congrats on solving it. Another update is now needed on the remlr reference page for 2 and 2a.

Scott, ordering these is not at all simple.

I thought id just be able to put in a routine order with one of the big suppliers,  ( who may have DLS in their  name somewhere) but I was told "sorry, but we cannot export military parts" ::)

And that was that, they wouldn't even think about it as soon as they knew my location.

I was fortunate, someone from another forum over there very kindly purchased them on my behalf, and these dangerous restricted items were soon on their way.

Blanchards also had them at about 3 times the price, I  didn't ask them about export!

I'm heading off to work now, but if anyone needs them, I'll post up the part numbers tomorrow.

Ross, I've always wondered about this myself, one of the Series 2CR photos on REMLR shows this clamp holding the spare wheel in place in the tub, I don't think the T bolt is designed for that though.

Cheers,

Mike.

We had these on our 2A's but were not even told what they were for so never used them. The fuel range with two tanks was more than adequate for a GS. The training at RAASC Centre back then concentrated on the trucks. Landrover stuff we were just supposed to find out ourselves I guess. I am not sure that whilst sitting on a full tank I would have wanted another twenty litres just behind me anyway.

No worries Dennis, I've always wondered about this myself.

I saw this on the net, and it got me thinking,

It looked very much like this,

But as I said, I wouldn't like to drive off road with that T bolt holding the spare.

(Photos courtesy of REMLR and somewhere on the net that I can't remember, any problems and I will remove them.)

The part numbers matched up between the UK ones and our RPS, so then the fun started with the export restrictions.......

Anyway, if anyone is after these, as has a friend in the UK  ::), the part numbers are,

Clamp Jerry can   333464

T Bolt                  307959

Wing Nut             301460

Craddocks have the T bolts currently, and the non exporters have quite a few of the other 2 bits!

Who knows someone probably has a box of them somewhere, and has no idea what they are - they were fitted to over 6000 vehicles at one stage, so you would think that there must be some somewhere over here.

To finish this topic off, I was down at Toolern Vale on the weekend (post coming up about that), and happened to see this on one of the vehicles there......

This one is the only one of these I've ever seen still fitted to a vehicle.

So, they are real, and certain Land Rover businesses in the UK may start wondering what is going on with these things all of a sudden!
