« on: November 13, 2015, 05:56:41 PM »
Now before I get bagged out for this, I am just enquiring , what would be involved in putting in an auto in the percentile.
Does Klr do it ?, has anyone done it ?

Just curious

KLR don't do it; to my knowledge nobody does. I know KLR have had thoughts of putting a baby Allison behind a 4BD1, but the cost would be astronomical simply due to how much Allisons cost.

There has been at least one auto conversion on Aulro - in a Rangie I think, with a ZF box - however it was unsuccessful (read: it died repeatedly) and the vehicle was returned to manual in short order.

I have to admit, it just doesn't seem right for a Perentie.

You can adapt a 4L80E to the Isuzu, there is a company is the US that makes the adapters but then you have the issue of the transfer case. A NP205 is possible as the they are available with a RHS drop for the front diff drive. A hand brake for the NO205 is an issue as most US vehicles fitted with these had rear drums with a cable setup. This will be a lot heavier than the LT95 setup.

Some updated info on fitting an Auto to a 4BD1 County/Defender in a technically detailed 20minute video on youtube dated August 2020.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1ZNGBxwXdg

From www.askorto.com.au (Wholesale Automatic Transmissions, Bayswater in Victoria)

I could not find any reference to the 4BD1/Defender kit pricing on their website.

From the video the biggest headache to the whole conversion job is apparently the drum handbrake (reposition) mount. Of course everything needs an engineers certificate but he explains the engineers approve it.
