S3 GS workshop top
« on: September 15, 2013, 10:58:33 PM »
Hi Guys

I have a project that I have had laying around for some time, when I purchased it I thought it was a little unusual but did not give it any further thought.

It is a Series 3 109 GS, it has a canvas workshop top fitted.

It has holes in the tray where bench seats once were? Maybe it was modified at some point? I will see if I can find some pictures.

Has anyone had any experience with this configuration?

Regards

Hi Adam

Like Scott I would be interested to see the piccys.

In regard to the "workshop" top, are you talking about the canvas truck cab hood, as used on the workshop Rovers and fire engines or are you talking about the full workshop rear canvas?

BTW: All GS Rovers had the four bench seats (2 per side) so if removed post service the holes would still be there.

Could be a Fitted for line that used a truck cab, and extra racking and reels fitted in the back, or possibly a wrecker, but I think only 1 series 3 wrecker was built.

Pic. The unusual thing for me was the hood bows and the canvas.

Definitely a workshop canopy.  Mind you, that can be fitted easily enough by adding the 2nd canopy hoop later.

Where about in the tub are the holes?  Floor, sides, wheel arches??

Hi Pheonix

It has two hoops, they do not look like the usual ones, they are welded together and painted green. There are a few pieces of tubing that have been notched and welded in between the two hoops to keep the gap, there is a single bolt on each side retaining the assembly. There has been another boss added to each side of the tray for the second hoop. Point to note, it does not look like the tidiest job in the world. I am confident that the vehicle has been modified, but by who, and when is the question I guess?

It has been a while since I have looked at the old girl, mainly because it is situated 1600km from my current location, but from recollection, the holes in the back would be consistent with the bench seats.

Another noteworthy point, this vehicle is registered on REMLR under the old owners name: Old Dog, from Cobar.

I'll have to get to that.

Sounds like a truck cab has been put onto a GS for convenience.  if the holes were in the floor there could have been a further significance.

I always wondered what happened to 'Old Dog' and his S3, cheers Dennis :)
everytime I went to Cobar I drove around some of the backstreets looking for his S3, but never saw it,,.

Hi DennisM

He sold it on Ebay some time in early 2006, or 2007, I will have to check. Memory serves the ebay auction finished at about 11:30PM, I was somewhere beyond half-cut and thought it looked like a great idea, I paid a little more than 1000 for it having no idea where Cobar was/is.

I drove from Albury Wodonga to Cobar and back in one day in an XF ute with a hire trailer. Highlights include my father nodding off then waking up in a start and grabbing the steering wheel and pulling us onto the shoulder at highway speed with a poorly loaded hire trailer citing that he thought I was drifting into the path of an oncoming truck, there was an oncoming truck...but we were not drifting into its path....We also ran out of oil pressure 100km out of Albury on the homeward stretch. We got there in the end.
