winch lever wont turn
« on: September 26, 2015, 08:25:25 AM »

The lever on the winch for the best part just moves slightly and on rare occasions moves across just enough to engage but would onlt be 30 degrees from verticle.
What di i need to do to get it working properly?

Hi Garry, it is probably working as normal. About 30-40 degrees is about the correct angle for it to be engaged. BUT there are only 2 drum positions when it will engage and they are 180 degrees apart. So basically you have to move the drum by hand or by pulling on the rope while applying slight pressure on the handle. When the dogs line up it will engage. Another way is to engage the pto in a gear with the transfer in neutral and then hold pressure on the lever, as the dogs line up it will engage but just remember that you can't disengage it while there is a load on it. You have to use the clutch to stop.

Just a tip if you overwind the winch and it is still engaged put it in reverse and it will wind out.
I was told this little bit of information at the expo on the weekend and could have greatly used it the previous weekend when I spent an hour stuck in mud trying to disengage my winch toi wind out cable after my brother over tightened it.
Seems very obvious once someone tells you but when stuck in the mud not something you think of.
