FFR 24v system - battery connection question
« on: August 26, 2015, 09:51:26 AM »
A question about the 24v system. In our vehicle it is used for Engel fridges and external lighting. We haven't had any problems doing this for a few years.

I had removed all the batteries for cleaning both the batteries and the trays,  as not only is there corrosion at the terminals but the exposed position picks up a bit of mud & debris etc.

When reconnecting, I have done up all connections excepting the battery links (the short black cable).

On preparing to attach this I note that there's a very small spark when reconnecting.

I do not know if this means there is a leak in the system or if it is the necessary open exitation for the 28v generator.

Advice would be appreciated.

NB I did check the useful FFR threads and AFAIK the subject hasn't been addressed

A small spark when reconnecting is normal  :)

My 24v 101 does that all the time - yes there will be 24v alternator excitation but only when ignition is on.

Uh-oh    - it's occurring when ign is OFF ( starting battery is also out of vehicle) is this  a concern?

I note that I did not nominate which vehicle - it's a perentie ffr

As Bearman says - dont worry - yes there may or may not be a small spark when you connect the batteries but not because of alternator excitation - just because of residual charge in the system.

Power only goes to excite the alternator coils when the ignition is on. Think about it for a minute - if power was on to the relevant side of the alternator all the time when the engine was not running you would have constantly flat batteries.

A quality “circuit board lacquer” is fantastic for the battery terminals with protection from the elements. Two coats will last for years. Most of the other products that are recommended for terminals are sticky and hold dirt. Before you put it away give the starter and alternator connections a spray.  :)
