Armoured Unimog LRPV Mothership
« on: July 29, 2012, 07:28:41 PM »
This combat veteran armoured Unimog LRPV Mothership was spotted sitting in the SASR Museum storage compound this week. I suspect that it is destined for museum display.

I took this photograph from a public street so no 'secret squirrelly' stuff to worry about :D

Two Unimog 'Mothers' were built and operated by SASR. The better example resides at the SASR Museum, and the other, very poor and stripped example, resides at the AWM. Not sure they are 'armoured', just very heavily modified. Pity its out in the weather.

The original concept was first trialed on K89, and was considered very successful, hence their continuation in service until only the last few years.

G'day Mike

The two original Unimog Motherships were not armoured. I don't know when the un-armoured Mogs were replaced by the armoured version but I did have the opportunity to view both 'retired' original Mogs whilst they were stored (pending museum duties) at Campbell Barracks late 2010.

The photo below shows one of the original Motherships during our involvement in Afghanistan. Not sure of the year but I believe it may have been 2001/02.

Thanks for the update. Having been out of the local loop for a while (we've been here in the US over 3.5 years!) I hadn't caught up with the building of any armoured versions.

Do you know how many and their ARNs?

Mike

I am not sure how many armoured Mogs were made for the ADF or how many were modified for SASR use.

As you can see from the photo below (46-121) and the Mog in my first post, there appears to be some major modification just behind the cab. Although the green over sand camouflage scheme is the same, the green patches to the drivers door, bonnet and guard are different so it is unlikely to be one and the same vehicle.

There's already a mothership in the museum.
I doubt they'll get another in there. Maybe going to auction?

Be an interesting vehicle to own, but apart from a mil vehicle enthusiast I can't see a civilian use for it.

Other than driving through Redfern during a riot of course.

"NO USE FOR IT"

Wash your mouth out with soap.......if our wives ever got word of this the entire site would be shut down..... :o

Myself.....I could see that being a head turner with massive street cred.

Just curious on the ballistic glass windshields......no one thought of bullets and bombs from, I don't know, the side, rear or top?

The ex SASR armoured Unimog Mothership shown in post #1 has now turned up at the Army Museum of WA. I am certain that it is the same vehicle shown in the second photo in post #1 as the camouflage pattern is identical to both vehicles. The camo paint on the passenger side is now slightly different due to some 'over painting'  but you can still make out the original scheme.

The vehicle has been named ???? Mulisha. I suspect that the full name is Metal Mulisha after the Xtreme Clothing brand...Metal Mulisha - http://www.metalmulisha.com/. It has the same font style to match.
