"Barn Find" of the century!
« on: July 26, 2012, 10:04:07 AM »
After Three years of looking for a 2A 88" I finally got one! or is that two and a 109GS!!!!!!!!!!!

I first heard about a bloke who had two shorties that he bought out of the army auctions and has kept them in good condition ever since and talked about selling them, that was 6 months ago and after a lot of asking around I finally got hold of him and yes he did want to sell them but wasn't in a hurry nor too fussed about it, but he asked me to come and have a look. I was pretty excited and thought I might be able to buy ONE off him.

Well I went to have a look and yes he was going to sell, I thought this is great I can pick which one I want BUT then he said if you want to buy one you have to buy everything, the two shorties the 109GS and a mountain of spare parts including 5 brand new (NOS) Olympic Trojan bar treads on rims!

The first thing that went through my mind was how am I going to explain this to my wife! quickly followed by I not going to tell her until she works it out! I'll hide the others in the back shed, that'll buy me some time! Next thing that went through my mind was how do I get them all home, it's going to be 3 more trips with a car trailer and it's a 600km round trip each time!

So two weekends later I have

113-693 - the database says there is a archive photo, could I see that please?
112-433
113-990

Would love to know if they made it to SVN, any thoughts?

Obviously I don't need all three so I will crawl over them on the weekend and work out what to do, most likely keep one shorty and the 109 is either restorable or a parts car - not sure yet. I'll probably have to sell one shorty to help with the funding but that will let someone else have one to enjoy.

The only issue with them is the civilian over spray paint, but I will bring them back to Olive Drab. Mechanically perfect.

Some photos

Awesome score!
Money changed hands yet?

I hate that moment of thinking "how do I tell my wife?"

The last time that happened I vacillated between disclosure and half-truths.  It was doing my head in.
So I just did the right thing and told her straight out that I had found a vehicle I wanted to buy and restore.  She surprised me  by saying "great!" and asked if she could get it for me for Christmas.

Honesty is always the best policy- but risky.

Also, I think the non-OD one looks great in those colours.

Yep all paid up I actually paid him more than he asked because I felt he was a bit cheap and my conscience wouldn't let me "rip" him off. I thought it was fare and he was happy.

I did confess to my wife as it was pretty obvious when I spent both Saturday and Sunday two weekends in a row picking up Land Rovers, she just said "that's nice" and went to the shops with the credit card! - no just joking, all good she understands my obsession

Regards
Scott

G'day Scott,  Great buy I reckon.
The yellow one is almost identical to my ex Navy (British) swb Series 2a Soft-top.
The colour is called Limestone and everyone says leave it as it is.
Also like the Series 2 that you want to dispose of in another thread.
Bit far to travel from here though to pick up.     Greg.. 8)

Well Done !!!

When (or if) the time comes, I would be interested in the 2nd 88 that you mention you may sell. I have been looking for my first ex-army vehicle for a long time and whilst I am about to obtain a S2a 109 FFT, it is 95% done. I would love the opportunity to pair it up with an 88, especially one that needs some work. Perhaps with that experience under my belt i may be brave (or silly) enough to tackle a ground-up rebuild.
Anyway, if you decide to part with it, could you contact me ?
Many thanks and happy rovering,
Matt

I've found the photos that Deejay took and refered to in 113-693's entry, but I can;t identify any plates on them, so I'm not 100% sure why I know that to be the ARN.  Maybe Deejay had it noted on the photos??

Hi Tommy,

Yeah I PM'd him a couple of times, second time to explain why it's on ebay.

Basically I had quite a bit of interest in it and fairest thing to everybody and to get the fairest price (for both buyer and seller) was to open it up to everyone, for the cynics out there this will be an honest auction and will guage the real price for 2A's.

Cheers
Scott

Real price? In what context would that be?
