Phoenix's Shed: Series 2 Ambulance "Eden"
« on: July 23, 2012, 01:22:53 PM »
Ok, the first part of the history of eden is here

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/remlr-projects/33560-108-098-series-2-ambulance-eden.html

I got more work done last wednesday with more chassis cleaned up, floor removed (most floor screws were rusted solid), chassis primed and so on.  the front 1/3 of chassis is almost ready to be painted black now.  THe rusted frame under the original bonnet has been removed as well, and a frame from my spare bonnet placed under it as soon as I can.

Oh, and steering links all cleaned up and primed ready for painting tomorrow if I am lucky ;)

Probably some photos by tomorrow ;)

Sounds good.
What did you do for your chassis clean-up and what paint did you use?  Any anti-rust treatment?

Wire wheels and sanding discs on the grinder for the cleanup. Places that were hard to get or I wasn't happy with 100% I used a rust converter, can't remember the brand off hand.  THen some metal primer, I've used the white knight red oxide I think it was, or maybe the killrust one.  I'll look tomorrow.  Then protec paint from their new shop at invermay in camouflage back for the chassis when I can paint it.

What's the red paint?

I take it you are not under taking a full strip down.

I do in fact have a replacement bulkhead that I got from DennisM.  It has some minor repairs that need doing, so the firewall, windscreen, engine, seatbox etc will come out as part of the restoration.

Not a complete strip down though as I have no desire, or equipment to, remove the ambulance body.  But everything else that can come off to be worked on will.  Once the engine, firewall etc are all done the front axle will come out, and so on and so on.  Exterior and interior will be the last on the list.  I'll get it going first!

The red paint is a rust preventitive / primer.  THe red makes it easy to see where you have covered, as well as when you have covered it.  I could have gotten it in any number of colours, but I like using the red on the chassis for the above reasons.

Is it a very very big job to remove the body?

What company made the bodies?  And did they ever do a Series 3 version....

And lastly how many did they have in the inventory??

The body was built on to the chassis by PMC (Pressed Metal Corporation) in sydney much like a bus body is, rather than built as a module and bolted on.  They can be removed, but as you can see, it's fairly large, and I don't have the equipment, space or skills to do it.

THere was one series 3 built (photos on REMLR), and a number of ambulance bodies have found their way on to stage 1 and 110 chassis or had various transplants.

The army had 2 prototypes (built into 1 we believe), 31 series 2, and 151? series 2a I think it was.

Delayed response, but impossible to tell.

Many were turned into campers or tour vehicles, others (I know of 2 -3) had bodies removed and large ute trays fitted.

Some progress to report.  Some of the chassis and steering components are now black!!

G'day Phoenix  :)

To make removal of the windscreen and firewall easier, loosen/unbolt the body to chassis and body to seatbox mounts and then you will be able to jack up the body enough to remove the windscreen and it's sealing rubber, then removal of the firewall as per book, remember to replace the lower windscreen rubber with the correct genuine unit or it will leak, and the upper rubber should be available through Clark Rubber, you just need the correct profile and density.

cheers
