Last Christmas I purchased a Huss "50 cal" Ammo Box on feebay. Cost about $30 plus shipping.
It was made well enough, so I got another:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMMO-BOX-50-CAL-PLASTIC-WATER-RESISTANT-LOCKABLE-AMMUNITION-DRY-TOOL-BOX-/251687248638?There are black ones and green ones and various suppliers on feebay and elsewhere such as disposal shops.
Its obviously poly-carb (tupperware) construction and lighter to carry than the old steel ammo boxes, but how good is it?
1. Its not a metal box so it won't rattle much. Of course it won't last 40 years like steel ones either. I think if they last 5 years its ok value at $6 a year... cost as much as a burger a year.
2. They are a good stash box for spare parts or electronics (cameras, chargers, batteries) or maps, guides, compass etc.
3. Its waterproof in regard to splashes or rain. Floods or sunk in a creek.. I don't know yet.
4. I have one of these as a toolbox for the Perentie FFR and one for the camera stuff.
5.
The one I use as a toolbox is exactly the right shape and size to sit on the FFR auxilary battery tray in the driver side locker. An ocky strap over the top stops them moving. In the side locker the box gets muddy and wet -- I have driven mine for a few months now and during rain (heavy rain in April) the tools stayed dry. I also like the idea of being able to access sockets and screwdrivers without having to dig under or remove the camping gear stashed in the back of the Land Rover.
6. You can sit on them.
7. You can stand on them when tieing stuff on the roof rack.
8. They are a good step to help an older family member get into the passenger seat. Especially if they are full of tools.
