Unless he, or she is a diesel-fitter, or a mechanical-fiitter in which case they will inspect measure and rebuild main-unit -assemblies.

When I did my training as a fitter-armourer the chief instructor described it as this; a fitter makes parts to fit; a mechanic replaces parts with those found in a packet,
