series land rover door seal rivets
« on: March 24, 2015, 09:31:50 PM »
Hi has anyone replaces their door seals and did you use the semi-tubular rivets
or use different rivets  and can you get or hire the tool.

Thanks

I'm looking into this at the moment as well.

The rivet squeezer is available from the states on ebay, but is not cheap - about $180 including shipping.

If anyone knows of any second hand ones out there, I'd be very interested............

My 2As all have pop rivets holding the seals on at the moment, and they were done in service, but the semi tubular rivets look much better.

ffr79, where did you get your door seals from? There are some dodgy ones out there, and the genuine ones don't seem to be available at a reasonable price from what I can see.

Cheers,

Mike.

Watch out for the complete sets being sold on ebay - the ones with the metal strip. The front strip tends to catch on the door at the body contour area. The other strips in the pack are ok.

Thanks for that Jason,

I think I know the ones you mean.

When you say OEM, do they have Land Rover branding or another mob?

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi Mike, they seam to be a lot better then some i have seen
but i have not come across any other full kits in the last few years
of doing up my FFR , couldn’t even get them out off the UK
So at the end of the day i guess it is if you don’t get them you might not come across a
set again, so i thought it was worth the gamble .
and they seam to fit really nice.
But still need to find the rivet squeezer for the semi-tubular rivets
for some of the seals the other seals use the normal rivets

when i did my S3, i found a vintage auto rubber place that had the right profile rubber, then i just got a few strips of 10x1.5mm aluminum, cut and shaped the Ali, slid the rubber over the top and pop riveted in place,  two doors and the tailgate only cost $80 in materials,
So many Landy's, None going :(

That was my solution to the rubber problem. I was thinking of using aviation rivets the only thing different they are not hollow.

Hi Philthy, their not a  normal pop rivet,
the ones used on the door rubbers are semi tub rivets their not really a normal rivet
they get squashed down instead of pulling the shaft through the rivet
I cannot seam to find the tool in Australia
just seeing how other members have had them done

Thanks
