RAN Land Rovers
« on: March 03, 2015, 09:57:46 PM »
Not sure what heading to put this under. maybe moderator can decide. May need an RAAF and Navy heading somewhere on the forum.

Found this photo of HMAS Perth.

Sitting on the dock is a Navy S2/S2A (door hinges) 109 Land Rover. I conclude that it is Navy as it has bar tread tyres, number plate starting with a red 'Z' and the driver appears to be in a white collarless sailors shirt. I suspect the colour of the Land Rover is light grey or light blue

Any other thoughts?

I think its later than a C suffix. So after 66. My guess is based on the lack of a Wiper mtr on the base of the driver windscreen.
Its a very cool pic. I like the little row of empty prams under the gangway.

That would make it one of these: (possibly 1 or 2 being likely)

That pic highlights that there was something special as the ship is tied up at Circular Quay rather than Garden Island.  This would have been an exceptionally rare circumstance.  Also Perth has an old style full size pennant number painted on its transom which was no practice in the late 60s on - this pic may very well be taken when Perth first arrived in Sydney after being commissioned in the USA after building in the Great Lakes.

Colour photo shows that this RAN 109 was painted 'powder blue'. Truck towing trailer also appears to be RAN (and same blue). Photo taken at Fremantle harbour.

I have posted an additional photo taken of a RAN Diving Team International truck. I presume that the Land Rover in the photo was painted the same blue as this truck.

To confirm the truck with the trailer is RAN, I found these two photos that show the same model truck on the parade ground at HMAS Leeuwin, Perth early 60s. Truck is an International B Series built between 1959-1961.

That ship (F55) is HMNZS Waikato. A Kiwi frigate.

The large ship in the middle is HMAS Stalwart.
