Tommys LRPV Collection
« on: January 12, 2015, 01:35:39 AM »
My collection currently comprises of eight ex SASR LRPVs.

1 x Mk1 - 113-657, 178-404
4 x Mk2 - 174-323, 1179-502, 179-520, 180-899
2 x Mk3 - 175-196, 178-204

(L to R) 178-204 and 174-323.

(L to R) 180-899, 179-502, 175-196 and 179-520.

LRPV Mk1 Prototype 178-199.

Although the parts shown in the photo below are not an entire vehicle, they do represent the remains of the original LRPV prototype. Of note is the hand painted camouflage colours and scheme. A great reference for future projects.

113-657

This LRPV is a pre prototype trials vehicle used by the SASR to test out various modifications prior to building the official prototype LRPV.

As it was in service circa 1971.

LRPV Mk1 178-404

178-404 has the distinction of being the only known Mk1 in existance. As the Mk1s were disposed of in the 1970s, the chances of finding anymore examples would be extremely rare. Non operational.

404 driving down an Adelaide street 1970s.

404 making a creek crossing during the 1970s.

174-323 is a Mk2 variant. It is the only LRPV that has retained it's originality and paint scheme. Fully operational.

LRPV Mk2 179-502

502 is my latest acquisition. It was recovered from Mt Barnett late last year. It is a late S2A. One of three in my collection. Non operational.

Importance of air for the radiator... I see in this Mk1 they have one tyre on the bonnet and one of two possible tyres out front. They have a water bag there instead. So its possible that the front springs were carrying the weight of an engine, 3 tyres and the PTO winch. In the Mk2 they have PSP up front which would be better for the airflow and lighter than two tyres as well.
Unfortunately in all the brushguard configs you have to remove gear to operate the winch.

Fantastic collection.

Hello Ross

Add to this two jerry can full of fuel. They were located in front of each guard behind brush guard. At this time in the LRPV evolution, the Mk1 did not have any improvements over the standard S2A suspension.

PARTS SALVAGE

Some of you may have seen this advertisement on Gumtree lately. The Land Rover in question is 177-152. It is a FFT and has been sitting on a farm (under trees) close to Perth for quite some time. Vehicle is pretty well knackered.

I went and had a look at it over the weekend and negotiated a price to remove whatever I wanted. The remainder would then be sent to the scrapman.

Managed to save -

Front guards
Radiator panel
FFT (behind the seats) tool holders
Military fuel tank dip stick
FFT rear jerry can holders
Pintle hook

Series 2A parts are becoming much harder to find these days. The parts will go to future restorations :)

Good to see you got a lot of the parts.

Do I see an army removable gearbox crossmember? http://www.remlr.com/detailsmods1.html

Gday Tommy,

Good to see those bits saved from scrap.

Did the vehicle still have the panel inside where the ammeter was fitted?

I'm after a good photo of the RADIO placard that goes next to the meter.

We are making up another batch of placards, but I do not have an original one of these for a template.

Probably not from the condition of the vehicle!

Cheers,

Mike.

Hello Mike

The panel you talk about has be removed and reinstalled into another Land Rover. Luckily, this Land Rover is sitting on the same property.

When I am over that way, I will drop in and have a look at the panel for you. I have seen the panel in question and it has not been painted over so placard should still be on it.
