Log Books with L/R?

Gents,

I get the impression that the log books are being sold along with the vehicles. Is that correct, and if so, how extensive and consistent are the entries?  Do they commence when the vehicle was taken on charge, or after the last 'rebuild'?  Nice to have, of course, but I'm wondering just how informative they really are.

The log books are in most cases being sold with the vehicle but its the last log book so if the veh has a replacement then the book starts where the last ended some are quite extensive and show every thing even fitting of driving lights and all mods done during the life of the book

Most I have read, and I've read a lot, don't say much. They can be interesting if the vehicle is a rebuild because it details what was replaced and usually has a dyno sheet. A lot of them have been lost and replaced, so will only have a few years of info in them. They let you know where your vehicle was posted though (at least recently), which is certainly nice to know.

The most interesting bits of my FFR's log book are the bits of A4 paper folded and filed in it. These are the bits that detail snorkel and driving light fitment, the final list of faults that sent it to auction (and hence I have been working through to fix), some rubbish about a white fleet hilux mistakenly stuck in and a bit of correspondence between members of the Army relating to the vehicle.

There is details of repairs in the actual log book, but nowhere near as interesting as the extra inclusions

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 110 without a logbook, as long as you inspect the vehicle thoroughly. Same as I am not concerned that mine isn't a Tenix rebuild as it is still in great condition, heck it probably had an easier life than most Tenix rebuilds, since it hasn't ever needed a rebuild!

Thanks, gents, pretty much what I suspected: highly variable information and certainly not a 'complete history of the vehicle', as has been claimed by one ill-informed person on another forum about old tank log books.

Incidentally, were you aware that, in the early 1990s:
48010 was in storage at BLG,
48803 was serving with 35 Field Squadron, 5 Field Engineer Regiment, and
49514 was with 16 Royal West Australian Regiment.

Log book entries might possibly depend on the housekeeping of the Parent Unit/s as well.
I'm totally happy with mine coming from the Parent Battalions Training Company in North Queensland.

Details every single thing with the vehicle since it was taken on charge in 1992.
Right down to a passenger passing wind in 1996.   Nah, just joking.

I'm probably  a lucky one though.  Some vehicles don't even come with a book.

Thanks for that tidbit, it is the same squadron it was serving with prior to disposal and logbook extras show it there around 2006 too, so it didn't get around much or at all.

Not surprising, 48-010 has evidently made a long and illustrious career of sitting in warehouses; first at BLG then DNSDC. I wish I knew where it was posted initially - being the 3rd production Perentie it must have gone to a unit that badly needed the most up to date equipment.

49514 was with 16 Royal West Australian Regiment.

I did not know that; I only knew that it was rebuilt in Darwin. 16 RWAR have a long list of deployments so that fits with the AQIS strip down theory.

48010 .... originally issued to the Army School of Transport in the late 1980s. Figures, I suppose, as the School would have had priority for training, hence received the early issues.

 And the source for that little gem is incredibly reliable!

I don't know if I'm lucky or unlucky.

As some know I purchased 48-852 from the October Minto Auction, it was the cheapest final bid of the month from all sites.

Yes it was missing a roof rack, tarp, broken interior clear lens, broken rear convoy lamp and damaged RHS front mudguard.  Most unfortunately it didn't have a logbook.

However

It seems that it has a new crate engine, probably fitted in Feb 2014 when all the filters were changed, it has a brand new front axle assembly still with the manufacturer stickers, new gearbox mounts and one of the tightest 4 speed boxes I have ever driven.  I believe that this vehicle had a major drivetrain overhaul in 2014.  If that information was available in the logbook, I'm sure the price would have been much higher.

The downside is I can only guess it was allocated to 8/12 Medium Regiment RAA because of the unit serials on the holders and the signs left in the door pocket, but have no idea what the bird device on the doors represents.

Where are you getting this information?! It's incredible. I've searched high and low for any scrap of information on 48-010 and found nothing.

They certainly are reliable!

I have actually added a unit history column to the REMLR database so that we can record information that we receive or find out better than just in the notes column of the database.

I know that this talk is about 110's & 6 x 6's, but when I got my S2A gunbuggy, it came with it's complete service history, from day 1 when the vehicle was taken and converted into a gun carrier, very nice bit of history to have, cheers Dennis

I think there was a member's logbook showing 1300hrs. It takes the cake so far.
