Firewall Swap Over

Gday all,

I would really like to solve the dodgy firewall issue I am having with my 2A 1963 88" GS. At this stage there is a bit of rust in the footwells and i think the areas where the door hinges are attached have been bogged up and are quite weak (doors dont line up any more). There have also been new guages etc added to the dash making several new holes

Trying to keep with military standards (and also being a newbie to panel work of any kind, and land rovers as well for that matter) is it okay to put all the original military cover plates/dials etc into a civilian model firewall? I have a really nice firewall at home in great condition that would do nicely.

If not, is there anybody that knows where to get a new firewall made or purchased? If so, any ideas on cost......

Hello Will,
The Civvy and Military firewalls are pretty much the same on the 2A, so no worries with using your good fwall, make sure its a 4cyl one though, you will have to drill a few more holes, move the dip switch and a few other little jobs, there was a change during the 2A fwall production in 1968 the wipers changed from been mounted on the windscreen to been moved into the LH side of the firewall glovebox and operated by cable, easy to tell them apart as there are extra holes just below the drip rail on the later fwall, and also make sure your good one is not a series 3 fwall as they are very different.

I am hopefully doing the same thing myself later this year, changing from a very sad military firewall to a civy one (not that there is much difference)

Thanks for the replies, I will have to check it closer as it does seem to be a later model as it has the in dash wiper motor. The vehicle i would like to put it in has the older style seperate windscreen motors. I am assuming the swap is still possible, but just might need a bit of fabrication to make it all work. Another job for the list of ever growing tasks........ All good fun though

Yes, The post 68 fwall will still bolt straight on, its easy just to blank(grommet) the two wiper spindle holes in the later one and retain your old windscreen with motors. This was often done in service anyway, especially in later years when the early fwalls were becoming harder to source.
