Diana's SIII FFR, 30-146 - Ffreddy

Just thought I'd post up my latest modification to my FFR.  I have been considering how I could take two vehicles to shows, particularly the buggy.

In the last month we've modified the pintle mount by removing the spacer and welding a tow jaw reciever in a vertical alignment (same as used on the civilian 110) directly to the plate on the back of the chassis. A second plate was cut to pick up three of the holes that would support the rear fuel tank in a civilian SIII and also provide attachment points for the safety chains.

That plate looks alot like my Mill Spec HCPU Mount I have on the 130...

The plate on the back of the chassis is standard on the Oz Military SIII.  I always think it's odd that the plate is fixed with 8 X 3/8"  bolts but only 4 of them actually hold the spacer and therefore the pintle.

FFReddy got taken out for a run yesterday, hasn't been started since ANZAC weekend 2014 mainly because of headlamp failure.  Started first go, well actually second as it had to have time to prime the fuel up to the carby but I think that is rather successfull after so many months.

Ran it around to the workshop area of the Chook Shed and pulled out the instrument panel and before I had a chance to jump into the back for a multi-meter Gary was in there with a test pencil.  Power into the switch O.K. no power out. (You were correct Geoff!)

Grab a second hand switch from another (damaged) instrument panel stick it in and everything Oky dokey.

Now thinking I should put relays on the headlamps.  Who else has done that on an SIII?

Another quandry.

FFReddy has original in-service holes on both sides for the HF antenna base bracket, and actually has one fitted on the LHS.



In my green radio equipment I have: 5 X PRC-77; 1 X RT 524/VRC; 2 X AWA F1 with vehicle mounting kits (F3), 1 X GRC-106 and various Thomson, Larkspur and Clansman equipment which are not suited to Australian FFR.

I am trying to decide on what radio kit to put in the Perentie 48-852 and what to keep in FFReddy 30-146.  Refitting the HF antenna bracket and one of the HF sets to FFReddy becomes an option.

Given the above equipment list, a lack of Raven equipment and the information provided above, what would others suggest as the appropriate kit for 28-852 and 30-146?

With out the Raven equipment the early 110,s were fitted out the same as a series 3 FFR so a 524vrc ,77 set and amplifier and a F1 would be most original even if it is the same set up as FFreddy

What I'm really wondering about is where to fit the GRC-106?

Given the mounting for the HF base on the body of FFReddy I'd be happy about mounting an additional HF but trying to decide on whether it should be the 106 or F1.

Having seen a 106 topple over in a vehicle, I'm thinking I could stabilise the top by a strap to the ROPs, but haven't (yet) got a ROPs in FFReddy.

So is a 106 acceptable in a Perentie?

Hi Diana,

My SIII FFR has relays in engine bay for headlamps.

The switch  on the stalk is a but under rated I think, so using relays rated at 30 or 40 Amps to apply 12V to the headlights will make the switch last longer.

You will need to upgrade springs to add the 106. Just kidding.

Exclusion zone around antenna approx 1.9m at 400W SSB 14 MHz.

Your nice F1 would be much safer but the 106 would look impressive.

I am in the process of doing my S3 but I have already done my Alpine, which is essentially the same thing.

The relays can be hidden inside the front panel if needed, but I also used heavier cable from the relays to the lights. The correct colour wire can be bought from Autosparks very cheaply. Don't forget to change the earth cable as well and make sure that all of the earths are bright and shiny.

The difference in brightness was so good, that I never bothered to fit the new globes I had bought,

I did my RRc years ago when I was running 120W globes and put the small Hella relays inside the headlamp compartments.  Just hadn't heard many people talking about doing it on SIIIs.
