ARNs in Photo, book or Video
« on: July 03, 2012, 12:43:01 AM »
If you find an ARN visable in any form (video, photo or mentioned in book etc) please list it here
with a link if online or a followable reference (eg full book name, authors name and page no.)
(even if its already listed it can't hurt!)

I'll kick it off...

Good idea Dig,
This could turn into a very long thread, Whats the plan are you going to list the ARN's we find in one post?. do you want ARN's off well known sites, AWM, NLA for example?.

I figure it can be trawled by those that can, to add details to the ARN page as a reference and if we do we will be able to locate them by ARN if mentioned...

I was aware it may become a long thread but think this stuff needs to be collated somewhere where it can be searched easier than just a general internet search.
and although thought of splitting to print vs internet threads I think this could be better combined..

I would suggest any reference would be good.

Holy cow Digger :o

I could post up literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of 'in service' photos with reference to the Land Rovers ARNs. For years, I've been collecting together photos that show the ARN of each Land Rover with the view to creating a database of ARN images. I will eventually rearrange and place each photo into ARN groupings such as 107-, 108-, 110-, 111- etc etc.

It's a great idea you propose but I'm not sure if this is the most efficient way of collating this information :(

the intent, a list of ARN's and links or references that can be followed or some way to get to its location if someone is interested etc.

I didn't list this one with the intent of filling it with photos/videos, just as a way of keeping track of pictures of these vehicles in service etc so that people can access them.
an index if you like.

Hope that helps..

I'd suggest if we get the ARN of a particular fleet and a reference it could be put in the title area (eg 112-345 in service SVN, photo) making it easier again to search...
sorting into ARN groups is a great idea but how? start arn group threads individually? eg "arn 108--- photos videos pictures links." am open to lots of suggestions
for sorting it especially as its early we can remake it/break it correctly and delete this one if thats better

I go to the top of the page where the http://  etc is displayed right click on it move down to COPY and click that.
then I either paste into my open REMLR page or to a "word" page where I paste it to use afterwards

there is probably a different way thats easier but there you go..

Digger

I think I misunderstood your request :-\. You want members to post up any ARN photo information/link etc they find while surfing the net, watching YouTube or browsing in bookstores  :D

Sounds good to me.

Thanks to Cookey for a loan of his books. I am assembling some AWM photo info. I can add anything you find on line or in a book if you post the info on the thread.

Also, lookingover AWM records I have found some interesting snippets regards Landies in Vietnam.

From 2 Ordnance Vung Tau, 1968 (they unloaded the sea cargo sent from Australia).

Note the mention of salt spray. All the Landies had been washed by hand "when water is available"..

Also, in a later report of the same month, that up to 3 "locals" are routinely employed to wash the vehicles. [Locals also help with garbage truck duties apparently. There are other employment opportunities also.] I also note that in 1969 routine orders often include instructions regarding use of the base steam cleaning unit:

...and here's a Vungers complaint (dated Dec 1968) about the damage to vehicles whilst at sea:

Well well.

Why the removal of the horns? Why the greasing of the tail lights etc unless they get very wet?

Maybe this explains why ex-Vietnam Land-Rovers commonly had chassis rust which contributes to their scarcity 50 years down the track.

EDIT
I found the reference for greasing tail lights etc in the AMF Vehicle Operation Instructions, chapter 36 "Sea Movement"

I've been on annual leave (this is the last week). I went in to the AWM to see the Long Tan Cross and I visited the research section. This renewed interest in ARN all happened after Cookey lent me "Mud & Dust" by M. Cecil. I have been checking docs looking for any mention of my prev. RACT OC who began as a RAASC Pte or LCpl in Vietnam 1966 and made it to rank of Mjr (ret GRes 2006). He's a legend (to me anyway).

Hey Dennis, thx.
Have I seen them in the REMLR collection?
Btw, i'm looking out for mentions of yours and mine and everyone's of course. I have ARN notes on a spreadsheet and aim to amalgamate info with the main remlr lists. I done this stuff all day and the eyes need a rest. There's days of reading and notes ahead when I have time. I have some well known members vehicles entered waiting for a reference. http://remlr.com/forum/index.php?topic=904.msg8143#msg8143

Send me a PM with his name and rank and I will see what I can find. I am the Secretary of the Army Transport Association Inc. and have access to all kinds of funny files.
