Series 2A starter motors

Hi everyone ,

Can you replace the starter motor off a '63 Series 2A with the starter motor off a '71 S11A ?

My starter pinion is jammed . The manual says to remove the protection cap and turn the square end of starter armature clockwise.

Can someone please explain what the protection cap is ? And

Do you need to remove the starter to complete this remedy?

I'd be very careful doing that you may cause a fracture in the fabric of the space-time continuum which could allow the Borg to invade Earth.  Resistance is futile, we are Borg!  ;D

The starters are basically the same from 1954 to the end of SIII apart from the V8, can even change 4 cyl 12V for 6cyl 12V starters.

You may find a cap on the back end of the starter (the front of the vehicle) it could even be missing and a square end of the armature shaft.  No you shouldn't have to remove the starter to do it.

Now for more stupid questions , does the negative earth, positive earth equation also play a part here ?

Oh and I'm still struggling to identify this cap ?????

the polarity doesn't matter because you can flash it to the other polarity.  Its what we do when we fit alternators to positive ground vehicles with dynamos.

If it doesn't have the cap, you undo the two bolts holding the starter onto the flywheel housing and it should release.  Then do the bolts up again.  Otherwise you can hit the starter hard with a hammer, it is often enough to release the drive.

Hi all,

I replaced the starter motor with one I purchased on Gumtree for $50. It worked fine when benched tested , worked fine after installation, then when to fire her up and park her she died.

I bit the bullet and grabbed a modern new starter motor. Now she works a treat. Thank you Diana for your help and advice.

Oh the original starter was completely knackered, the pintle spring was broken in two places and the insides were stuffed.
