There are no differences between the drivers and passengers rear springs in 109" wheelbase heavy duty and extra heavy duty (1 ton) models.

The reason I ask Diana is its got a lean to the drivers side by 15mm, now I took the back springs off only, and may have put them back on the wrong side, however if there 1 ton springs, it would not matter.

It could be the front springs maybe?

What can I do to eliminate things?

Hi Justin

It could be that you have fatigue in the springs on the drivers side.  The reason is that over its life the vehicle always had a driver but not always a passenger.

Also when Land Rover was first designed it was the practice to camber the roads (the curve in the road from side to side with a hump in the middle) therefore you needed different camber in the springs to compensate for the road camber.  Today sealed roads are not cambered and neither are many dirt/gravel roads. This cambering of the springs tended to make the Land Rover sit lower on the drivers side you don't really need to camber the springs anymore.

To fix your problem:
  • mark each spring to identify where it was.
  • remove the rear springs and check that they have the same camber.
  • Do the same for the front and compare the difference with the specs above.

Once you know what you have your choice is to swap the sides over or have them re-set to the original specs.

Thanks D

I have numbers stamped on the rear springs if thats any help?

Its not a easy job taking the springs off.

The front ones I left on due to the fact the bolt in the chassis front bush was well stuck, and the bush was in so so condition, but I am now thinking do I just go all the way and put new fronts in? If so will parabolic ones do?

as far as i could tell before re-fitting the rear they were the same, both in looks and camber.

I kind of think fatigue could be the reason, how do you check the camber? and can it be done in situ?

Just checked the following part numbers

Standard rear 109 road springs:                                                 Heavy duty rear 109 road springs

          Offside (R)             279678                                                        Offside (R)                  272967

          Nearside (L)           279679                                                        Nearside (L)                272968

My right rear is 272967, cant mark out left but one would think its correct.

just need the front numbers now.
