I guess its just a way for people to show that your post was helpful in some way to them.
In my thread about my truck, if someone posts something that I find useful or helpful, I click the "Thank" thing on their post. (The thing I circled in red in my last post here in this thread.)
This only makes their Thanks count go up by one, and even if they don't notice, I know I thanked them for their contribution that helped me.
This is also why you don't have a "Thank" button on your own posts.
On other forums and things like Facebook, (which I refuse to use), they have a "Like" button or option which then shows exactly who "likes" the post. I prefer our system. If you have a "like" option that lists people for all to see, I want a "dislike" or "total cr*p" option.
