Hi,

I think this sign is the post-war 1 Armoured Brigade in NSW and is based on the white on black 4 Aust Armoured Brigade formation sign used during the war.

New Guinea Force did attempt to have a formation sign designed for them but I think it got overtaken by force of circumstances and when 2 Aust Corps became NG Force in early 1944 they retained the 2 Aust Corps cockatoo on a branch in white on black.

I believe that is also the tac 1/15 parramatta lancers use on their museum vehicles

1/15 RNSWL was previously 1 RNSWL, which was a unit within 1 Armoured Brigade.

www. pretty much confirms with what Keith is saying as well, ie colour version - 1 Armoured Brigade (CMF 1950's) and B/W version 4th Armoured Brigade (WW2).

I'm guessing Mr Taubert's book is consistant with this as well ? Anyone have a copy handy ?

Yes, Steve Taubert's book shows it as 1 Armd Bde, which included 1 RNSWL, 12/16 HRL and 6 NSWMR.

I've attached a scan of Standing Orders for Dress (Provisional) issued as Military Board Instruction No. 90 of 1 January 1958 and describes the formation signs.

The original MGO Specification for transfers for military vehicles, first issued in 1950, was also rewritten in 1958.

Go for it  Also have 1952 and 1955 SO Dress editions, they are no different except that 1955 and 1958 also described the formation signs for AGRAs (Army Groups Royal Artillery).

The specification for the actual vehicle transfers appears to be CASD/AUSTRALIA 1458.K, supersedes CASD/AUST/1458.J. Approved 10 May 1950, reprinted 1 July 1958.

I would put it up but my copy looks to me like a facsimile, typed from the original for a book or similar and I wouldn't want to upset somebodys' applecart.

Here's the Tac on one of the Lancers' museum IIas. I think it was the WKSP. The Gun buggy was also carrying this Tac plate.
