Thats a good idea.
You will however need to make sure you use the correct wires, and you will not need all the wires from the NATO.
Yes there are a number of different standards under various countries own needs.
I am planning to modify the NATO sockets for all my vehicles so I can use the NATO plug for additional functions. Some of the following are in the current standard.
F = Blackout stop (this is Rear Fog on UK MoD vehicles)
H = Reversing lamps. ("Convoy" in NATO standard with pins A & C)
J = Service brakes (electric trailer brakes). (RH Stop in NATO Standard Pin B LH stop)
L = Vehicle ground.
Am even planning to have metal plates to identify the non-standard wiring.
