Headlight mods/upgrades
« on: July 07, 2014, 09:06:21 PM »
Sorry, new guy question here.
Looking at old series 2a land rovers for sale on various websites and I keep seeing series 2a vehicles with series 3 headlights fitted into the fenders together with the old headlight setup too. Looks, well, ugly. Was this a factory conversion or a series 2a 1/2?
I've now seen 2 ex army series 2a 88" vehicles with this setup as well.

No , wasn't a factory option.
Was done by owners that thought it was trendy to give more lighting.

Worse part is, on ex Army models you now have to find the mudguards to put it right.

Hello Ryan,

The later Series 2A  made a transition from 1968-1970 to having the headlights located in the mudguards as standard. The main way to tell if a vehicle has the headlights in a 1970 Land Rover is a Series 2A is that the gauges inside the cab are located in the centre of the dashboard. In the 2a they had the metal mesh grille panel i front of the radiator.

The next model - the Series 3 from 1971 had the gauges located near the steering wheel and a plastic grille panel.

Kind Regards
Lionel

It is easy to tell if a Series 2a should have headlamps in the front of the mudguards, just look at your chassis number.

Suffix "G" was the introduction of the wide headlamp model so anything from Series 2 up to (and including) Series 2a Suffix "F" was cross eyed (narrow headlamp position) and Suffix "G" and "H" wide.
