And for some reason I can't add to my previous post something about 'Hostica' keeps jumping out at me ??????? Philthy I have been using Sta-Bil for a number of years now, I also use lead additive + 125mls of auto/transmission oil per 20 lts of petrol, I just can't afford to keep 10 Land Rovers full of fuel all the time,.  :-[ :( :(

My gunbuggy has developed an issue, it will not idle unless the choke is out partially, I need to know which is the slow running/idle jet, can anyone tell me which part it is from this diagram

the parts book mentions neither slow running or idle jet so I'm at a loss before I start, cheers Dennis

Well, this morning I made good on my word to strip the carburetor off the engine, I took it down to it's basic bits

and yes then it started to sprinkle rain as you would expect, anyway I pressed on using the carby cleaner in a pressure pack
then blew it all out with compressed air, re-assembled it and refitted it back on the vehicle

primed the system hand and added a splash down the throat and it came to life, it is idling a tad fast with the choke out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a5D-A-h_nQ&feature=youtu.be
but after it warmed it and the choke in, it does idle, yippee, now just need to be able to get it out and take it for a drive cheers Dennis  ;)

Is that not just the mixture screw? I will admit I'm a d*** s***, but I can follow instructions from a book, and to my way of thinking a screw ain't a jet, but again you could be correct LOL cheers Dennis  ;)

You are correct. The screw meters the amount of air fuel mixture on idle.

Your best friend here is a vacuum gauge plug it in the brake vacuum hose. Mess with the screw until you get the highest vacuum on the gauge.
This is after the engine spark timing is correct.

Ok if you don’t have a vacuum gauge. Another very old school way of setting the idle mixture is start with the screw turned in all the way. Now back it out three and a half turns. Start the engine. Set the idle speed (looks like 9# and 10# in the drawing until your idle speed is stable. (look at the engine and you want it tick over as smooth as possible set it at this stage by the idle speed, it may idle a bit high at this stage but that’s ok.

With the engine idling away and warm have the filter off the carburettor. Use a playing card is perfect or simular progressively slide the card flat over the hole in the carb. In a perfect word you should get just past ¾ covered before the engine idle speed falls.

If it gets faster and faster as you slide the card over the mixture is the mixture is too lean so turn the idle mixture screw in.

As you get better and closer to the correct point the idle speed will get faster so as you get there correct the idle speed each time. If you don’t the carb sucks more air than at idle and will start drawing fuel from the next jet up from idle.

But  I think get a timing gauge, a hand held tachometer, and a vacuum gauge and it will be a cake walk.

PM me if you need help or youtube is you friend.
Cheers Phil

I reread your question looking at the diagram.

The air/fuel mixture works like this in this diagram

#17 is a brass or bronze metered little tube that restricts the amount of fuel through it.

#16 is just a plug that holds it together.

#14 is the screw that meters the amount of air through that is being sucked down by the piston. The air getting past the screw tip is bypassing the main throttle body because the butterfly is closed. It’s pointed to provide the best aerodynamics to mix and get the best air fuel atomization.

#15 is just a spring that holds it in tension at the set amount.

The fuel amount is set by the size #17 (and if you want to split hairs the fuel bowl height) the air is the only adjustable item.

The amount of air speed is critical and is influenced by idle speed and the amount of compression the engine and valve/cam shaft timing to draw both the air and fuel mixture down.

Oh and another reason your engine struggles to idle but improves when the choke is on is that there could be a leak in the intake system somewhere. Check vacuum lines and all gasket mating surfaces with a spray of start-ya- B#$@!^ or brake cleaner or even fly spray with the engine idling.

If there is a leak the where you spray the engine RPM will go up.

You are compensating a lean mixture by having to use the choke.

Good luck Phil

I reversed it out of the shed and found where the solex was leaking fuel. I have had quite a few fuel leaks but i think I have fixed them all now. I also sat in it and pondered for a while.

Lol

I might sit in mine on the weekend and ponder about part numbers!

Turned my CR into a civvy with an exmoor trim canopy ( been reading classic Land Rover mag too much!) but easily converted back to a CR.
